Bitcoin Holds Above $77K as Crypto Shrugs Off AI Stock Selloff, Senate Advances Clarity Act

Bitcoin climbed past $77,800 on September 14 as digital assets decoupled from a broader tech selloff, while growing odds that Congress passes the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act added fuel to crypto sentiment ahead of a key Senate vote.

Bitcoin Decouples From the AI-Driven Tech Selloff

Cryptocurrency markets opened the week on a notably different footing than Wall Street. While major technology and semiconductor stocks slid sharply on Monday, Bitcoin pushed higher, trading above $77,800 — a gain of more than 1% over the previous 24 hours. Ether followed a similar path, rising roughly 2% to trade near $2,500.

The divergence traces back to comments from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei over the weekend, in which he argued that the pace of frontier AI development should slow due to safety concerns. OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk both voiced support for greater caution in the sector. The remarks rattled AI-linked equities: shares of cloud and infrastructure companies such as CoreWeave, Cipher Digital, MARA Holdings, and IREN all fell sharply in premarket trading, dragged down by fears that slower AI development could delay chip orders and reduce demand for computing capacity.

Crypto, notably, did not follow suit. Traders appear to be treating digital assets as a hedge against the AI-driven volatility gripping traditional tech markets, with Bitcoin's resilience standing out against a backdrop of falling chip and data-center stocks.

Clarity Act Gains Momentum Ahead of Senate Vote

Adding to the bullish tone in crypto markets is renewed optimism around the U.S. Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, the bill intended to establish a comprehensive federal regulatory framework for digital assets. According to prediction-market data on Polymarket, the odds of the bill being signed into law before the end of 2026 have risen to roughly 30%, up sharply from a low of just 12% at the start of September.

The legislation faces a procedural vote in the Senate this week, a critical test of whether it can clear the chamber's filibuster threshold. Senate Republicans have circulated revised bill text that reportedly includes an ethics framework tied to concerns over President Donald Trump's personal crypto holdings, along with narrower banking provisions, stablecoin circuit-breaker mechanisms, and new conflict-of-interest restrictions for digital commodity exchanges. Passage still requires Democratic support to overcome procedural hurdles, and analysts caution the bill's fate remains far from certain.

What It Means for the Market

Together, these developments paint a picture of a crypto market finding its own momentum independent of broader risk sentiment. Bitcoin's ability to hold gains while AI-adjacent tech stocks slide suggests growing investor confidence that regulatory clarity — even if only directional — is becoming a meaningful catalyst in its own right. With the Federal Reserve's interest-rate decision also due later this week, traders are watching closely to see whether crypto's current decoupling from equities proves durable or short-lived.
