A different model: self-custody

Gnosis Pay stands apart from most cards in this category because it is self-custodial. Rather than loading a balance into an exchange, you spend from a smart-contract wallet on Gnosis Chain that you control, with the card settling over the Visa network. That design puts the keys in your hands and reduces reliance on an issuer holding your money. For users who came to crypto specifically to avoid trusting a centralized balance, that is the whole point, and it is rare among cards that still plug into mainstream payment rails.

What we measured

Our latency probe was excellent at about 52 ms, one of the fastest results among the cards we track, which is why the product earns a strong performance score. It ranks 7th of 15 with a best score of 7.5. We could not clearly confirm a public status page (recorded as unknown), and our data shows no completed third-party audits in our records, both of which hold the overall score back. For a self-custodial product where smart-contract code sits between you and your money, published audits carry extra weight, so their absence from our records is a signal worth chasing down before you deposit.

Honest caveats

  • Self-custody cuts both ways. You control the wallet, but you are also responsible for keys and account security; mistakes are harder to reverse.
  • Audit visibility. We do not have audit records on file, so verify the current security posture and any published reviews yourself.
  • Status transparency. We could not confirm a public incident page, which makes outages harder to track.
  • Regions and KYC. As a regulated Visa product, availability is limited and identity verification applies.
  • Taxable spending. Paying with crypto or stablecoins can still carry tax implications depending on your jurisdiction.

Who is it for?

Gnosis Pay is a natural fit for people who want to keep custody of their funds while still using a mainstream card, and who are comfortable managing an on-chain wallet. It is less suited to users who prefer a hands-off, exchange-managed experience or who want the reassurance of a published status page. We assess responsiveness, custody model, and transparency rather than reward rates.

50% weight5/10

A status page exists but publishes no feed we could parse — readable, not auditable. Part of that may be our blind spot (we read three platforms).

FAQ

Is Gnosis Pay really self-custodial?+

Yes. It is built around a smart-contract wallet on Gnosis Chain that you control, so you spend from your own funds rather than an issuer-held balance. You keep custody, but also responsibility for key security.

How fast is the service?+

Our latency probe returned about 52 ms, one of the quickest results among the cards we track, which supports its strong performance score.

Has it been audited?+

We have no completed audits on file in our data, recorded as zero. That does not prove it is unaudited, but you should confirm its current security reviews directly before relying on it.

Are there taxes on spending?+

Possibly. Spending crypto or stablecoins can be a taxable disposal in some jurisdictions. Check local rules and keep records.
