What Is Gnosis Pay? The Self-Custodial Visa Card and Its December 2026 Closure

Gnosis Pay is a Visa debit card that spends stablecoins straight from a Safe smart account on Gnosis Chain that the user owns, instead of from a prepaid balance held by a company 1. Gnosis Pay manages the program and Monavate issues the cards 13. The most important fact today: on September 21, 2026, Gnosis Pay announced that its own consumer card and web app stop working at 23:59 UTC on December 20, 2026 3. After that date, users can still withdraw funds from their Safe, with no deadline, but card spending moves to partner apps 45.

The consumer card is closing: key dates

Gnosis Pay says it is moving away from serving consumers directly. It now runs card programs for wallets, fintechs and neobanks, and says it cannot keep its own consumer apps at the standard it wants alongside that work 4.

Date What happens
Sep 21, 2026 Formal notice sent to all cardholders 3
Dec 20, 2026, 23:59 UTC All physical and virtual cards stop. The web app closes except for withdrawals 3
Jun 18, 2027 General cardholder support ends 3
Jun 12, 2028 Support for refunds, disputes and chargebacks ends 3

What this means in practice 3:

  • Cards cannot be reactivated after the cutoff. Subscriptions and recurring payments on the card will fail, so update them with each merchant.
  • Payments authorized before the cutoff still settle.
  • Export your transaction history before December 20, along with the card's last four digits and expiry date.
  • If you do nothing, your cardholder agreement with Monavate ends when the card stops. Rights to refunds, disputes and complaints survive.

Where users can move

Gnosis Pay points users to partner apps that use its new card system. The route depends on your card currency 5:

Card currency Partner route What carries over
EUR Rebind Account, IBAN and card, without new ID checks
USD Picnic (Brazil) or MiniPay (elsewhere) Picnic keeps your setup; MiniPay needs a new account on Celo
GBP No route yet Card works until Dec 20, 2026; withdrawals have no deadline

Moving happens in two stages. First you switch to the partner app. Later, when that partner's program launches, you accept its terms and get its card 5. Partner programs set their own fees, which may differ from Gnosis Pay's 3. The current partner list is at gnosis.io/pay/partner-apps 5. Users who already used Gnosis Pay through a partner such as Rebind, Picnic, MiniPay or the Gnosis App will be contacted by that app 5.

Zeal users need an extra step. Zeal's card services also end on December 20, 2026. Until you add a wallet you control, such as MetaMask or Rabby, as a second owner of your Safe, every transaction must be signed inside Zeal. Funds in Zeal's earn product must be withdrawn first, because they are not moved 5.

How the Gnosis Pay card works

The card spends from a Safe, an open-source smart-contract account deployed on Gnosis Chain when you sign up. You own it through your signing wallet. Gnosis Pay says it does not host the Safe or take custody of your crypto, and that the Safe is not a regulated e-money or payment account 1.

Two add-on modules connect the Safe to the card 1:

  • The Roles Module lets the card system move the exact amount of a purchase from your Safe to a settlement Safe when you pay.
  • The Delay Module puts a 3-minute delay on transfers out of the Safe that are not card payments, to prevent double-spending.

Spending is 1:1 in stablecoins: a €10 purchase uses 10 EURe 6. Which stablecoin you hold depends on where you live: GBPe in the UK, EURe in Switzerland and the EEA, and USDCe in other supported non-EEA countries 1. For background, see how crypto cards work.

Fees and limits

These are the published terms for the current card, which runs until December 20, 2026 6:

Item Terms
Card purchases No transaction fee
Foreign currency No Gnosis Pay conversion fee; Visa's rate applies
Card order Free, including shipping
Replacement (lost/stolen) 4.99 EURe/GBPe/USDCe
ATM 250 per withdrawal, 500 per day; 5 free withdrawals or 200 per month, then 2%
Spending 5,000 per transaction; 8,000 per rolling 24 hours
Network (gas) fees None on card payments; charged on on-chain transfers from the Safe

Amounts are in the card's stablecoin. Contactless limits vary by country and apply only to the physical card 6.

Who can use it

Under the Terms of Service updated November 18, 2025, you must be an individual aged 18 or over, resident in the EEA or a listed non-EEA country, and not subject to sanctions. The account is for personal use only 1. Identity verification is part of card onboarding; at launch Gnosis used Fractal to collect KYC details 8. New sign-ups make little sense now that the consumer card is closing; new users are directed to partner apps 5.

Who operates Gnosis Pay

Gnosis Pay is part of the Gnosis ecosystem behind Gnosis Chain. It was announced in July 2023 as the network behind the "Gnosis Card," launching first in the EU, EEA and UK with EURe 8. Your contract is with Gnosis Pay Co Ltd in London if you live outside the EEA, or with Gnosis P. Tech, Unipessoal Lda in Lisbon if you live in the EEA 1. The card itself is issued by Monavate under a Visa Europe license 2. Monavate Ltd is an electronic money institution authorized by the UK FCA, and UAB Monavate is authorized by the Bank of Lithuania 3.

Incident record

1 recovered

The incident shows a trade-off in this model. Your keys stay with you, but the modules that let the card spend from your Safe are smart contracts, and a flaw in them can expose funds.

A flaw in the signature check (ERC-1271) of the Zodiac Delay and Roles modules let an attacker queue withdrawals from 5,281 users' Safes

Jun 1, 2026recovered
The flaw dated back to module version 3.4.0 (Oct 2023).
Outcome
Smart-contract flaw in card infrastructure; users made whole (company statement)
Loss
About $1.5M taken; about $300K made inaccessible
Recovered or reimbursed
Gnosis absorbed the losses; it says all funds were restored to users. Service was back for 99% of users by Jun 6, and new modules were deployed Jun 4–7
