What is Hyperliquid?
Hyperliquid is a decentralized exchange for perpetual futures that runs on its own purpose-built layer-1 blockchain with a fully on-chain central limit order book. Perpetual futures ("perps") are contracts that let traders bet on an asset's price, long or short, with leverage and no expiry date. Positions are kept in line with spot prices through periodic funding payments between longs and shorts.
Why does the order-book design matter?
Many on-chain venues use liquidity pools, but Hyperliquid runs an order book on-chain, aiming to feel closer to a centralized exchange while keeping trades and balances verifiable. Its focus is low-latency matching for active traders.
How does leverage and liquidation work?
Leverage lets you control a position larger than your deposited margin, so both profits and losses are magnified. If the market moves against you and your margin drops below the maintenance threshold, the position is liquidated, meaning it is force-closed and you can lose the collateral backing it. Funding rates can also add a recurring cost to holding a position.
