What is KuCoin?
KuCoin is a global centralized exchange that has become known for listing a very wide range of tokens, including many smaller-cap assets earlier than larger rivals. It offers spot, derivatives, earn products and a trading-bot suite, and it supports around 23 chains for deposits and withdrawals. For traders who want early access to emerging tokens, its catalog is one of its main attractions, and its automated trading bots appeal to users who want to run strategies without third-party tools.
Scale and track record
KuCoin has operated for roughly 9.6 years and reports about $3.3B in reserves in our dataset. That combination of history and published reserves supports solid scale and track-record scores, even if its reserve figure is smaller than the very largest venues we tracked.
Security history and transparency
Being candid: in September 2020 KuCoin suffered a major hack of roughly $280 million. Notably, the exchange recovered or reimbursed the large majority of the stolen funds, which is often cited as a relatively strong incident response. Still, it is part of the platform's history and worth knowing. We also did not find a dedicated public status page, so real-time incident transparency is limited. Our single-location API probe returned in about 321 ms, toward the slower end of the exchanges we measured, though that is one reading from one location.
What we measure
We look at reported reserves, chain reach, operating history, transparency and our own latency probe. We do not assess fees or support depth, so we make no claims there.
Who should consider KuCoin?
- Traders hunting a broad catalog and earlier access to smaller tokens.
- Users who want built-in trading bots and earn products.
- People comfortable doing their own due diligence on newer assets.
It is less ideal for users who prioritise a spotless security record, want a live status page, or need a strictly US-regulated venue. A broad catalog also means more early-stage, higher-risk tokens, which is a listing philosophy rather than a safety judgment we can score. As with any custodial exchange, you are trusting KuCoin to hold your assets, so treat its published reserves as one input and do your own diligence on any thinly traded token before buying.
