Kraken is one of the longest-running centralized exchanges still operating, with roughly 15.6 years of history behind it. That endurance through multiple market cycles earned it a perfect track-record score and a joint-top overall result in our exchange dataset.
What Kraken offers
Kraken is a full-service spot exchange with additional derivatives, staking and OTC services. It is a US-headquartered venue that has built a reputation around security engineering and proof-of-reserves reporting, and it serves both retail and professional traders. Its Pro interface targets active traders with advanced order types and margin, while a simpler interface handles straightforward buying and selling. Over the years it has expanded into more fiat pairs and regulated products than many offshore peers.
How does it perform on our measures?
Kraken publishes a public status page, which we treat as a strong transparency signal: users can check system health and incident history directly. Our single-location probe clocked its API at about 102 ms, one of the quicker responses among the large exchanges we tested. Bear in mind this is one probe from one location and is not a guarantee of the latency you will see in practice.
What we score
- Operating track record in years.
- Transparency, including status-page availability.
- Our own latency probe.
We do not evaluate trading fees or the responsiveness of customer support, so we make no claims there.
Who is it a good fit for?
Kraken suits users who value a long, stable operating history and a security-first reputation, including those in the US who want a domestically focused venue. It is also reasonable for traders who want a public status page to monitor and a mix of spot, margin and staking under one roof. It may appeal less to people hunting the very newest low-cap listings, where more aggressive offshore venues often move faster, or to those who want the single widest token catalog.
Any caveats?
As with any custodial exchange, you are trusting Kraken to hold assets on your behalf, so the usual counterparty considerations apply. We did not have a verified on-chain reserve figure for Kraken in this dataset, though the company has historically emphasised reserve attestations, so review those disclosures yourself.
