How it scored with us
Rainbow performed well on the two things we can measure directly. Our probe of its public site and backend returned in about 73 ms, one of the fastest results in the wallet group. Its operating history is roughly six and a half years, enough to show staying power. The main gap is transparency: we did not find a public status page, which keeps its score from climbing higher.

Because Rainbow is non-custodial, recovery is entirely your responsibility; a lost seed phrase cannot be restored by anyone. As a hot wallet it carries the usual online exposure, so malicious approvals and phishing remain the practical threats. We assess track record, our measured latency and transparency. We do not audit the app's code, though its open-source nature means others can.
The onboarding angle
Rainbow's clearest contribution is making self-custody feel less intimidating. Thoughtful defaults, readable transaction details and support for Ethereum name services help newcomers understand what they are doing rather than blindly clicking through. That does not remove the fundamentals: the recovery phrase is still yours to protect, and a friendly interface cannot stop you from approving a malicious contract if you rush. For someone taking their first steps off an exchange and into Ethereum apps, the combination of open-source code and a fast, tidy experience is a reasonable place to learn the ropes, provided the balances involved stay modest until the habits are second nature and larger sums move to colder storage.
