Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody wallet where you, not Coinbase, hold the keys. This is an important distinction: it is separate from a Coinbase.com exchange account, where the company custodies your assets. With Coinbase Wallet the recovery phrase lives on your device, and it connects to dapps across multiple chains.
Why it scores highly for us
This is one of our top-ranked wallets, and transparency is the reason. Unlike most peers, it has a public status page, so users can see incident and uptime information in real time, a standout in a category where that is rare. It also carries a long track record of close to 10 years behind the Coinbase brand.
The measured trade-off
Performance was the weak point. Our probe of its public site and backend was slow, at roughly 527 ms. That did not sink the overall score, because strong transparency and track record carried more weight, but it is worth knowing.

Keep in mind
Being self-custody, recovery is your responsibility; losing the seed phrase means losing access. As a hot wallet it faces the usual phishing and approval risks. Do not confuse it with the custodial exchange, and remember that a status page reports service health, not the safety of your individual transactions. We rate track record, our latency probe and transparency, and we do not audit the wallet's code.
Why the transparency matters
Most wallets in this category go dark when something is wrong, leaving users to guess whether an outage is on their end or the provider's. A public status page changes that dynamic: during an incident you can check whether backend services are degraded before assuming your funds are at risk or repeating a failing transaction. That is a modest but real benefit, and it is rare enough here that it lifted Coinbase Wallet well up our ranking despite the slow probe result. Pair the wallet with a hardware device for larger holdings and the everyday convenience of the Coinbase ecosystem comes with fewer trade-offs.
