LayerZero V2 vs WBTC
LayerZero V2 scores 9.56/10 and WBTC scores 7.78/10 in the CoinPulse crypto bridges ranking (data collected October 19, 2026), first and fourth of 15. Both have 100% of their score measured. LayerZero V2 leads on audits, value locked and chain reach. WBTC leads on track record, with the longest record in the category. The two are also connected: since 2024, WBTC has used LayerZero's token standard to move between chains. So this is less a choice between rivals than a comparison of a messaging protocol with one of the assets that uses it.
LayerZero V2 scores higher: 9.56/10 against 7.78/10. It leads on 3 of 4 criteria, WBTC on 1.

Where the 1.78 gap comes from
- Audits: +1.40 to LayerZero V2. Eight listed audits (the Endpoint V2 repository published by LayerZero Labs) score 10. WBTC has one published audit link on DefiLlama, pointing to its own audit page, which scores 6; that is a count of links, not of audits.
- Chain reach: +0.52 to LayerZero V2. 91 chains score 10 and one chain scores 6.
- Value locked: +0.30 to LayerZero V2. $12.49B and $9.63B are close in dollars but sit either side of a band boundary (10 vs 9).
- Track record: +0.44 to WBTC. 7.3 years (counted from July 1, 2019, because the record gives only the launch year) scores 10, and LayerZero V2's 2.5 years since April 2024 scores 8.
Net: 1.40 + 0.52 + 0.30 − 0.44 = 1.78.
Not alternatives: WBTC uses LayerZero
In September 2024, WBTC's custodian BitGo selected LayerZero's OFT standard so WBTC can exist on several chains, starting with Avalanche and BNB Chain. According to that announcement, BitGo keeps ownership of the WBTC contracts, and each cross-chain transfer must be verified by BitGo's own verifier network plus a second verifier.
Two consequences for reading the scores:
- WBTC's reach of one chain is DefiLlama's count for the WBTC entry. It does not mean WBTC exists only on Ethereum.
- Their risks overlap. WBTC moved across chains depends on both BitGo's custody and the LayerZero verification setup. A high score for one does not offset weaknesses in the other.
What the scores leave out
- Message verification (LayerZero V2): how each app configures who verifies its messages is not scored. LayerZero V2's entry page notes that tokens and apps built on it carry their own risk.
- Custody and redemption (WBTC): how the bitcoin is held and who can mint or burn WBTC are not scored.
- Hack history: 0% weight for bridges. DefiLlama returned no match for either service on October 19, 2026.
- Fees, transfer time, interface: not scored. Unscored website probe: layerzero.network 56 ms, wbtc.network 183 ms (category median 84 ms).
Which fits which reader
- You are choosing a cross-chain protocol to route through or build on: LayerZero V2 has the most measured evidence in the category (8 audits, $12.49B, 91 chains). Its record is shorter, at 2.5 years.
- You want bitcoin exposure in Ethereum DeFi with the longest operating record: WBTC, at 7.3 years. Review its custody model separately. For other bitcoin wrappers, see the full ranking.
- You hold WBTC on a non-Ethereum chain: both services are in your risk chain. Read both rating pages.
The numbers side by side
| Measured | LayerZero V2 | WBTC |
|---|---|---|
| Value locked | $12.49B | $9.63B |
| Published audits | 8 | 1 |
| Track record | 2.5 yr | 7.3 yr |
| Chains | 91 | 1 |
Where each one falls short
LayerZero V2
Track record: Live 2.5 yr (since launch (no later than Apr 18, 2024), public record). Most failures happen young, so time survived is real signal.
WBTC
Security audits: 1 published audit with links (DefiLlama) — read the findings yourself. Audits reduce risk, they do not remove it.
Which to choose
How does LayerZero compare to other bridges?+
On October 19, 2026 data it ranks first of 15 at 9.56. It is the only bridge at the maximum on audits, value locked and chain reach. See the full ranking and LayerZero V2 vs Portal.
Is WBTC safe?+
The score is not a safety certificate. WBTC has one published audit link on DefiLlama, holds $9.63B and has the category's longest record. Custody and redemption, often the main risk for a wrapped asset, are not scored.
