What Phantom is
Phantom is a self-custody wallet that made its name on Solana and has since expanded to additional networks including Ethereum. It runs as a browser extension and a mobile app, keeping private keys on your device while giving you swaps, staking, NFT support and dapp connectivity.
Our assessment
Phantom ranks near the top of our wallet list. Two things drive that. First, a track record of roughly five and a half years with a strong reputation in the Solana ecosystem. Second, responsiveness: our probe of its public site and backend returned in about 170 ms, among the quicker results we recorded. We could not confirm a public status page, which is the main thing keeping it from a cleaner score on transparency.
Good fit for
- Active Solana users who want a polished, fast wallet.
- People who value slick design and in-wallet swaps and staking.
- Users spreading activity across Solana and EVM chains from one app.
Less ideal for
- Bitcoin-first holders or anyone anchored entirely outside its supported chains.
- Large long-term balances that belong in cold storage.
Risks worth stating plainly
Phantom is non-custodial, so recovery is on you: lose the seed phrase and no one can restore access. Because it is a hot wallet, the practical dangers are malicious signature requests, fake sites and compromised devices. We assess track record, our measured latency and transparency; we do not audit the wallet's code, so treat our rating as one input alongside your own precautions.
A note on its reputation
Phantom built a following largely on the quality of its interface and its handling of Solana's fast-moving activity, from token launches to NFTs. That popularity has a downside worth naming: widely used wallets attract impersonators, and fake Phantom sites and browser add-ons have circulated. Download only from the official source, and double-check any transaction that asks for broad permissions. The wallet's expansion beyond Solana means you can increasingly treat it as a general-purpose app, but each chain you add is another surface to stay alert on. Convenience and vigilance have to travel together here, and the fast interface should never rush you into approving something you have not read.
