What is Trezor?
Trezor is a cold-storage device line from SatoshiLabs, a Czech company based in Prague. It is widely credited as the first commercial hardware wallet, with the original Trezor One shipping back in 2014. Devices keep private keys offline and confirm transactions on their own screen, and they pair with the Trezor Suite companion app.

What makes it distinctive?
Trezor's defining trait is openness: both its firmware and hardware designs are open source, so the community can inspect and audit them. The original One and Model T rely on a general-purpose microcontroller rather than a dedicated secure element; the newer Safe line adds a secure-element chip while keeping the open-source philosophy.
Are there known caveats?
- Security researchers have demonstrated that older models can be compromised by an attacker with physical possession of the device and specialist equipment. A strong passphrase mitigates this, but it underlines that physical security still matters.
- Openness is a strength for verifiability but means the design is fully public, so buyers should keep firmware current.
What is the ecosystem like?
Trezor Suite, the companion app, handles setup, coin management, sending and receiving, and features such as coin control and passphrase-protected hidden wallets. Because both the software and the device designs are open, third-party wallets and tools have long supported Trezor too, giving users flexibility beyond the official app. This transparency is the through-line of the brand: rather than asking you to trust a closed product, SatoshiLabs publishes its work for scrutiny, which many long-term self-custody users regard as the right default.
Who is it for?
Trezor is a natural pick for people who value open-source, auditable tools and want a proven, long-standing brand with wide third-party support. It is less ideal for anyone who wants a company-run status page or who cannot physically secure the device.
