What is Upbit?
Upbit is South Korea's largest centralized crypto exchange by trading volume and one of the most significant venues in Asia. It is deeply tied to the Korean won market and dominates local trading, making it a regional heavyweight even though its global footprint is narrower than some rivals. For Korean users it is often the default venue, with deep won-denominated liquidity that is hard to match elsewhere.
Track record
Upbit has operated for roughly 9.6 years and earned a full track-record mark in our scoring on the strength of that history and its commanding position in the Korean market. Endurance in a heavily regulated domestic market is a meaningful signal, even if it does not by itself guarantee safety.
Where our data is limited
Our dataset did not include a verified on-chain reserve figure or a confirmed supported-chain count for Upbit, so we cannot cite reserves as we can for several peers. We also did not find a dedicated public status page, which limits real-time incident transparency. Our single-location API probe returned in about 304 ms, a mid-to-slower reading; as always it is one measurement from one location.
Security note
For candour: Upbit disclosed a hot-wallet breach in 2019 involving a significant amount of Ether. The operator covered the loss from its own funds so that users were not left short, which is often cited as a reasonable response. It remains part of the platform's history and worth knowing when weighing custodial risk.
What we assess
We score operating history, transparency, reserves where published and our latency probe. We do not rate fees or support quality.
Who is Upbit for?
- Users in South Korea trading won-denominated markets.
- Those who want access to the deepest Korean liquidity.
- Traders focused on the regional market rather than global reach.
It is a weaker fit for users outside its core region, and for those who want published reserves and a live status page. Custodial risk applies as with any exchange that holds your assets, and users outside Korea should be especially careful to confirm both legal access and practical fiat on- and off-ramps before relying on the platform.
