What explains the 0.48-point gap

  • Reserves (+0.28 to Robinhood). $14.92B earns 10; $4.67B earns 9.
  • Security record (+0.36 to Robinhood). Both have one incident on record, and both are older than three years. Robinhood's $8,200 account takeover is in the under-$1M band (7, raised to 9 for age). Bitstamp's $5.2M phishing loss is in the under-$10M band (5, raised to 7).
  • Latency (+0.16 to Bitstamp). 10 against 9.
  • Net: 0.28 + 0.36 − 0.16 = 0.48.

Same owner, separate ratings

Robinhood completed its roughly $200 million acquisition of Bitstamp in June 2025 (The Block). CoinPulse's method rates each service on its own record: a product line never inherits its parent company's incidents, and each uses its own DefiLlama entry, status page and probe target. That is why Bitstamp's 2015 hack — which predates the acquisition by a decade — counts against Bitstamp only, and why the two can sit at #1 and #3 rather than as one entry.

What that does not tell you: whether the two share custody, staff or infrastructure today, or how integration will change either service. Those are company questions, covered in the Robinhood and Bitstamp profiles.

Where the numbers need care

  • Latency surfaces differ. Robinhood was timed at its live interface and scored on interface bands; Bitstamp at a public API endpoint. 299 ms vs 60 ms is not a like-for-like race.
  • Track record. Robinhood's 13.3 years run from the company's 2013 launch documented in its SEC filing, not from the start of its crypto service. Bitstamp's 15.3 years run from its 2011 founding. Both earn the full mark.
  • Reserves are separate DefiLlama entries. The figures come from DefiLlama's Robinhood and Bitstamp pages as tracked on October 19, 2026. Reserves show disclosed wallets, not liabilities.

What is not measured

Fees, spreads, supported coins, account types, app experience, support, licensing and availability by state or country are not scored for either. Check each company's own terms.

Which fits which reader

  • You want the larger verifiable reserves: Robinhood ($14.92B vs $4.67B).
  • You want the smaller, more recent hack entry over an older, larger one: Robinhood ($8,200 in 2023 vs $5.2M in 2015).
  • You trade through an API and want our fastest probe reading: Bitstamp (60 ms at its public API); test from your own location.
  • You want the longest operating record: Bitstamp (15.3 years).
