HTX
HTX is a global cryptocurrency exchange founded in China in 2013 as Huobi by Leon Li, one of the largest venues of the last decade. In late 2022 Li sold his controlling stake to an investment firm linked to TRON founder Justin Sun, and in September 2023 the platform rebranded from Huobi Global to HTX to mark its tenth anniversary — the name is read as Huobi, TRON and Exchange. It offers spot, derivatives and earn products worldwide and is closely associated with Sun's wider crypto ecosystem.

What is HTX (formerly Huobi)?
HTX is the exchange most people still think of as Huobi. Founded in China in 2013 by Leon Li, Huobi grew into one of the world's largest exchanges before Chinese regulatory pressure pushed it offshore and reshaped the business. The pivotal change came in late 2022, when Li sold his controlling stake to About Capital, an investment firm tied to Justin Sun, the founder of the TRON blockchain; Sun took a public advisory role and became the platform's most visible figure.
In September 2023 Huobi Global rebranded to HTX, timed to its tenth anniversary, with the letters standing for Huobi, TRON and Exchange. That name change made explicit what the ownership shift implied: HTX is now deeply entwined with Sun's broader ecosystem, including TRON and the stablecoin and DeFi projects around it. For users, the brand is new but the exchange, its history and its leadership associations are what to weigh.
Is HTX safe?
HTX's security record is uneven and closely tied to the turbulent period around its rebrand. In 2023 it was hit by two separate thefts: an $8 million hot-wallet drain in September that was fully returned after the exchange negotiated with the attacker, and a much larger November exploit of the associated HECO Chain bridge alongside an HTX hot-wallet loss, cumulatively around $100 million, which was not recovered from the attacker. In the November case Justin Sun publicly pledged that HTX would cover all losses and the exchange resumed deposits and withdrawals, though there has been no independent confirmation that every affected user was made whole.
Beyond the incident history, the harder judgement for anyone considering HTX is governance. The exchange's fortunes are bound up with Justin Sun, a figure who has faced US securities-fraud allegations, and with TRON's ecosystem, which concentrates a lot of risk in one orbit. As with any custodial exchange it holds your keys, and here that trust extends to a specific set of owners and affiliated projects — a factor worth weighing separately from the raw feature set.
Incident record
On 25 September 2023 an attacker drained about 5,000 ETH, worth roughly $8 million at the time, from an HTX hot wallet. HTX and advisor Justin Sun publicly asked for the funds back and offered a white-hat bounty. The attacker returned the full amount, and on 7 October 2023 HTX confirmed recovery and paid a 250 ETH (~$410,000) bounty. Customer funds were not affected.
On 22 November 2023 the HECO Chain bridge — linked to the same ecosystem — was drained of roughly $86.6 million, and an HTX hot wallet was hit around the same time, for a cumulative loss reported near $100 million, apparently via compromised private keys. Justin Sun said HTX would fully compensate users for exchange losses and the platform restored deposits and withdrawals. The stolen funds were not recovered from the attacker, and there is no independent confirmation that all affected users were reimbursed in full.

Frequently asked
Is HTX the same as Huobi?+
Yes. HTX is the exchange formerly called Huobi. Huobi Global rebranded to HTX on 13 September 2023, its tenth anniversary, with the letters standing for Huobi, TRON and Exchange. The history and much of the leadership carried over.
Is HTX safe?+
HTX's record is mixed. In 2023 it suffered an $8 million hot-wallet theft that was fully returned, and a much larger November exploit near $100 million that was not recovered from the attacker but which Justin Sun pledged HTX would cover. Beyond the incidents, its close ties to Sun and the TRON ecosystem are a governance risk to weigh alongside the usual custodial exposure.
Who owns HTX?+
In late 2022 Huobi founder Leon Li sold his controlling stake to About Capital, a firm linked to TRON founder Justin Sun, who became a high-profile advisor. HTX is now closely associated with Sun and his wider crypto ecosystem.
Was HTX hacked?+
Yes, twice in 2023. A September hot-wallet theft of about $8 million was fully returned by the attacker after HTX offered a bounty. A November exploit of the associated HECO Chain bridge plus a hot-wallet loss totalled around $100 million; those funds were not recovered, and Justin Sun said HTX would cover the losses.
