Bitcoin is trading near $80,600 on Wednesday, October 28, as US markets brace for the Federal Reserve's interest rate announcement. At the same time, the backbone of American securities settlement has pushed tokenized assets into live production. One story is about short-term macro caution, the other about long-term structural change, and together they define the mood of the market today.

Bitcoin Gives Back Early Gains Before the Fed

Bitcoin briefly climbed above $81,000 during Asian trading hours, then surrendered most of that advance and slipped back to about $80,600, roughly where it closed on Tuesday in US hours. The move followed a rough Monday, when selling hit nearly every major token and bitcoin fell under $80,000 for the first time in more than a week. Ether is changing hands around $2,330, while XRP trades near $1.32.

Traditional markets offered little direction. Nasdaq 100 futures were up about 0.3% and S&P 500 futures about 0.2%, while crude oil gained roughly 2%, keeping inflation concerns in focus.

What the Market Expects From Fed Chair Warsh

The Federal Open Market Committee is scheduled to announce its decision at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Traders broadly expect the benchmark rate to stay unchanged at 3.75%–4.00%. The real debate is about tone. The prevailing view is a "hawkish hold": no change in rates, but firm language in the statement and a press conference by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh designed to prepare investors for a possible rate increase in December.

That matters for digital assets because higher borrowing costs typically pull capital away from risk assets. Monday's sell-off showed how quickly crypto traders reduce exposure when rate-hike talk intensifies. The global backdrop is not helping either, since the Bank of Canada raised its policy rate by 25 basis points to 2.5% today, citing inflation that is higher and more persistent than previously expected. Some analysts remain constructive, however. Galaxy's head of firmwide research, Alex Thorn, argued this week that the bear market likely ended in June, when bitcoin traded below $58,000, and that investors should consider accumulating.

DTCC Launches Tokenization for US Stocks, ETFs and Treasuries

Away from price action, the most consequential headline of the day comes from the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation. DTCC has gone live with its tokenization service on the Canton Network and its own private Besu blockchain. The initial scope covers selected large-cap stocks from the Russell 1000 index, exchange-traded funds, and US Treasury bills, notes and bonds. According to a DTCC spokesperson, 34 securities are eligible at launch, representing approximately $30 trillion in market value.

Twenty firms have signed agreements to access the service, including JPMorgan, Citi, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, Barclays, Fidelity Investments, Citadel Securities, State Street and UBS. DTCC says more participants will follow.

Why DTCC's Approach Stands Out

The tokens are backed one-for-one by securities held at DTCC subsidiary Depository Trust Company, and official ownership records stay with DTC even as tokens move between registered wallets. This separates the model from synthetic stock tokens that merely track a share price without delivering ownership rights. Eligible firms can convert securities into tokens during business hours, with DTCC targeting processing times of 15 minutes or less, and the tokens can then move around the clock, subject to compliance restrictions.

The launch builds on a no-action letter issued by the US Securities and Exchange Commission in December. DTCC's roadmap includes adding Stellar and Circle's Arc blockchain next year, along with tools for settling transactions with digital cash and using tokenized securities as collateral. Citi analysts have projected that the tokenized securities market could reach $5.5 trillion by 2030, while Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange are also developing their own tokenized trading infrastructure.

What to Watch Next

Traders will first parse the Fed statement and Warsh's press conference for any signal on December. US third-quarter GDP data follows on October 29, and Coinbase is due to report quarterly results on Thursday. Bitcoin options worth more than $11 billion are also set to expire on October 30, with $78,000 flagged by analysts as a key support level. Whatever the Fed decides, DTCC's launch is a reminder that blockchain infrastructure is moving steadily into the core of US financial markets, regardless of short-term price swings.
