US exit announced
Dec 2022 – Jan 2023outcome unclear- Outcome
- Resolved by settlement. Nexo returned to the US via partners in 2025–2026
Nexo is a custodial crypto platform, operating since 2018, where clients deposit digital assets with the company 35. It offers four main things:
Because Nexo holds client assets, its terms, not a blockchain, decide what happens to them. In some jurisdictions those terms let Nexo lend or re-pledge deposited crypto 3. Nexo left the US in 2022, settled with the SEC and state regulators in 2023, and relaunched US services through partners in 2026 710.
All Nexo products run from one custodial account in the Nexo app or web platform 15:
The NEXO token sets your loyalty tier: Base, Silver, Gold or Platinum. The tier depends on the share of your portfolio held in NEXO, and higher tiers unlock better rates, more cashback, free ATM allowances and free crypto withdrawals 14. Nexo's terms warn that the token is not covered by investor-compensation or deposit-guarantee schemes 3. A tier built on NEXO therefore also carries exposure to that token's price.
The Nexo Card is a Mastercard that you can switch between Credit Mode and Debit Mode in the app at any time 1. Nexo launched the card in 2022 and added the dual credit/debit mode in 2023 511. It is issued by DiPocket UAB, which holds a Lithuanian e-money licence, for Nexo Services Sp. z o.o. in Poland 2.
| Credit Mode | Debit Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| What pays for a purchase | A crypto-backed Credit Line drawn at the moment of purchase; your crypto stays in place as collateral 1 | Your balance of stablecoins, crypto or EURx/USDx/GBPx, converted at purchase, in the order you choose 1 |
| Rewards | Crypto cashback if your balance is above $5,000: from 0.5% (Base) to 2% (Platinum) in NEXO, or 0.1% to 0.5% in BTC 1 | No cashback; unspent balance keeps earning interest 1 |
| Main risk | Borrowing cost, and liquidation if collateral falls 4 | Selling crypto at the point of sale; spread on conversions 4 |
Getting the card. Card eligibility is narrower than Nexo's overall reach 12:
What the card account is not. The issuer's terms state that the card account "is not an E-Money account" 2. The funds behind the card are crypto assets held under Nexo's terms, not e-money balances or bank deposits. Complaints about the card itself are handled by DiPocket, under Lithuanian law 2.
For a broader explanation of card models, see how crypto cards work.
Card fees (as of October 2026) 14:
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Monthly, annual or inactivity fee | None |
| FX fee, weekdays | 0.2% (EEA/UK/Switzerland); 2% (rest of world) |
| FX fee, weekends | 0.7% (EEA/UK/Switzerland); 2.5% (rest of world) |
| Free ATM withdrawals per month, EUR/GBP cards | €200/£180 (Base), €400/£360 (Silver), €1,000/£900 (Gold), €2,000/£1,800 (Platinum) |
| Free ATM withdrawals per month, USD cards | $150 (Base), $300 (Silver), $600 (Gold), $2,000 (Platinum) |
| ATM fee above the allowance | 2% (minimum €1.99 / £1.99) |
The weekend window runs from Friday evening to Sunday evening UTC; the exact hours shift with the season 4.
Illustrative example (assumptions stated): a €100-equivalent card purchase in US dollars made on a Saturday by an EEA cardholder incurs a 0.7% FX fee, about €0.70. If the purchase is in Credit Mode, interest on the drawn credit and any later repayment fees also apply.
Platform fees (from Nexo's rest-of-world fee schedule; terms for other regions may differ) 4:
Nexo is a custodian. Your assets sit in Nexo's accounts, not in a wallet you control 3. According to the rest-of-world terms, as of October 7, 2026 3:
Re-use of client assets is how a lender pays interest. It also means that, if Nexo failed, clients could stand as creditors rather than owners of specific coins. Terms differ by region, so check the version that applies to you.
Nexo names Ledger Vault, Fireblocks, Bakkt (US) and Tangany (EEA) as custody providers 6. It cites SOC 2 Type 2, SOC 3 and ISO 27001/27017/27018 certifications and CCSS Level 3 6. These certify security and data processes; they are not solvency audits or guarantees of client assets.
Account protections include 2FA, biometric login, withdrawal-address whitelisting and an anti-phishing code shown in genuine Nexo emails 6. If you prefer to hold your own keys, see self-custody.
United States. Nexo announced in December 2022 that it would leave the US market. In January 2023 it agreed to pay $45 million, $22.5 million to the SEC and $22.5 million to state regulators, over its unregistered Earn Interest Product, and to stop offering that product to US investors. The settlement was on a no-admit, no-deny basis 7. Nexo announced its return in April 2025 9. A February 2026 release describes a formal relaunch offering yield programs, an exchange, credit lines and ACH/wire transfers through "regulated partners", with Bakkt providing trading infrastructure 10. The Nexo Card is not among the US services listed 10.
Bulgaria. In January 2023, Bulgarian prosecutors raided Nexo's offices and charged four co-founders. They dropped the case in December 2023, citing no evidence of crimes. Nexo AG then filed a $3 billion claim against Bulgaria at the World Bank's ICSID in January 2024, and that claim was at an early stage when last reported 8.
Other regions. Nexo serves the EEA, UK, Switzerland, Canada, the UAE, Australia and New Zealand under separate terms, and the rest of the world under Cayman Islands–governed terms 3. Product availability varies by country.
No hack or loss of client funds at Nexo was found in the sources reviewed (as of October 23, 2026).
Hacks in DefiLlama’s public database are also scored as the security record on the Nexo rating page.
