USDD is a US-dollar stablecoin from the TRON ecosystem, now backed by crypto collateral locked in smart contracts rather than by a bank account. Since January 2025, anyone can mint USDD by depositing assets such as TRX or USDT into a vault, or swap other stablecoins for it 1:1 through a Peg Stability Module 1614. The design is a fork of MakerDAO's original code 10. USDD runs on TRON, Ethereum and BNB Chain 3. It replaced an earlier version, now called USDDOLD, that the TRON DAO Reserve issued and held in custody. That version briefly lost its peg in June 2022 215.
USDD has no company issuer in the way Tether or Circle issue their coins. The first version, now labeled USDDOLD, was issued by the TRON DAO Reserve, which also acted as its custodian. Institutions on a TDR whitelist minted it by burning TRX, and TDR said it backed the coin with a reserve of BTC, USDT, USDC and TRX 2. In 2022, press coverage described it as an algorithmic stablecoin linked to TRX supply 15.
The current USDD moved minting on-chain. Users create it themselves against collateral, and the docs describe governance as community-driven 1. In practice, the ecosystem remains tied to TRON: the interface at usdd.io is provided by the "USDD Team" 11. TRON DAO subsidized the savings yield 814. The USDD and JUST DAO teams choose where reserve capital is invested 8. A ChainSecurity audit from October 2025 describes the admin role as "fully trusted," able to run privileged changes and, in principle, reach user funds 10. Treat "decentralized" as a description of the minting mechanism, not of who controls upgrades.
There are two ways new USDD enters circulation.
Vaults. You lock a supported asset in a vault and borrow USDD against it. Each collateral type has its own minimum collateral ratio, set higher for more volatile assets 5. On TRON, the vault types include several TRX vaults, staked TRX (sTRX), USDT, WBTC and a "Smart Allocator" vault (SA001-A). Ethereum has ETH-A among others 4. To get your collateral back, you repay the USDD debt plus any accrued stability fee. Fee levels are set per vault in the app and change over time.
Peg Stability Module. The PSM swaps USDD and supported stablecoins at a fixed 1:1 rate. On TRON that means USDT. On Ethereum and BNB Chain it covers USDC and USDT 610. The docs say there is no service fee, only network gas. Each swap is capped by the amount shown as "Available" in the PSM, so large exits depend on how much stablecoin the module holds at that moment 6.
The PSM is the main reason USDD holds close to $1. If USDD trades above or below the peg, traders can profit by swapping through the module and selling on the market 1.
USDD is backed by crypto assets in public smart contracts, not by cash or Treasury bills at a bank. The docs list every collateral contract address so holders can check balances on TronScan or Etherscan 4. That answers several common questions directly. There are no banking partners or custodians holding USDD reserves. There is no FDIC or other deposit insurance. There are no monthly attestations by an accounting firm of the kind fiat-backed coins publish.
Overcollateralization is the protection. Every vault must hold more value than the USDD it minted. On February 6, 2025, a launch-period press release cited total collateral of about $130 million at a 1.23x ratio 14. That figure is historical, so check the live data page on usdd.io for the current ratio and collateral mix. Part of the backing is USDT that came in through the PSM and vaults. USDD therefore also carries Tether's issuer risk.
Depositing USDD into the Earn page on Ethereum or BNB Chain mints sUSDD. This is an ERC-4626 vault share whose value in USDD rises as rewards accrue 7. You can withdraw at any time, and the docs state there is no lock-up 7.
Where the yield comes from matters. At launch, TRON DAO fully subsidized a 20% APY tier 14. The docs now say the subsidy model is being replaced by Smart Allocator. Under it, part of USDD's reserve capital is deployed into external venues such as Aave, chosen by the USDD and JUST DAO teams. Net returns are passed to stakers, minus a risk reserve 8. That makes sUSDD returns variable. It also adds the risk of those external protocols. Current rates are shown only in the app.
Most people acquire USDD on an exchange or DEX. The docs list Bybit, Gate, Poloniex, CoinW and LBank, plus JustLend DAO and SUN.io on TRON 13. Wallets named include TronLink, TokenPocket and imToken 13. On-chain users can mint through a vault or swap in through the PSM.
To exit, you can sell on a market, swap back through the PSM while capacity lasts, or repay a vault to unlock collateral 6. Holders of the old token can convert USDDOLD to USDD on usdd.io at no fee beyond gas, with no deadline 12. Confirm the contract address before trading, because the two versions are different tokens 4.
Access to the usdd.io interface is restricted. Its Terms of Use exclude residents and citizens of the United States, United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Singapore, plus sanctioned regions 11. The contracts themselves are on public blockchains, but this page does not suggest ways around those terms.
Hacks in DefiLlama’s public database are also scored as the security record on the USDD rating page.
