What Is Wirex? Wirex One Card, Fees, Countries and How It Works

Wirex is a payments company founded in London in 2014 that lets people spend crypto and stablecoins with a Visa debit card 1513. In September 2026 it replaced its long-running Wirex App with Wirex One, which pairs a self-custodial crypto wallet with a debit card, multi-currency accounts and interest-bearing "Earn" accounts 1312. Card services are provided by Wirex Limited, an FCA-authorized e-money institution, and in some regions by partners 2. Benefits depend on a five-tier membership tied to your balance and to holdings of Wirex's WPAY token 8. The card is not offered in the US 5.

Who runs Wirex

Wirex is a group of companies. Under the Wirex One terms, the entity you deal with depends on where you live and which feature you use 2:

Region Card services Crypto services
UK Wirex Limited (FCA e-money institution) Crossmint Europe, S.L. (CNMV)
EEA Wirex Limited, with UAB Wirex (Lithuania) running the card programme Crossmint Europe, S.L.
Australia & New Zealand Novatti Group Limited —
Rest of world Wirex Limited —

The site footer also says a Wirex institution is supervised by El Salvador's financial regulator 15. Wirex describes itself as a principal member of Visa and Mastercard 15. Pavel Matveev is co-founder and CEO 13.

Wirex One vs the old Wirex App

Wirex One is a new app, not an update. Existing users sign up with the same email, confirm with their old login, and their verification, balances and cards carry over. The old Wirex App then becomes read-only 12. Former paid "X-Tras" plans map onto legacy tiers for a transition period 12.

The bigger change is custody. In the old app Wirex held your crypto. In Wirex One, crypto sits in a self-custodial wallet whose keys are created and managed by Privy, a third-party key-management provider. Wirex's terms say it does not hold those assets and cannot move, freeze or reverse transactions 1. Fiat, card and other regulated services are still provided by the Wirex entities above 12. Read up on self-custody before moving large balances: there's no one to reverse a mistaken transfer.

The Wirex One card

The card is a Visa debit card you fund from your Wirex One balance 6:

  • Virtual card: available to all users, for online and Apple Pay/Google Pay spending.
  • Physical card: Premium tier and above.
  • Visa Signature Metal: Private and Bespoke tiers, with extra Visa Signature travel benefits 6.

You must complete identity verification (photo ID and selfie) before activating a card 5. Limits as of October 2026: up to 30,000 EUR of purchases a month (75,000 EUR on Metal) and ATM withdrawals up to 750 EUR a day and 5,000 EUR a month on physical and Metal cards; virtual cards can't withdraw cash 7. Limits vary by region. Background: how crypto cards work.

Membership tiers, cashback and WPAY

Wirex One has no subscription fee. Your tier depends on two numbers at once: total portfolio value and the share held in WPAY 8.

Tier Minimum portfolio WPAY share Cashback Card
Base — — 0.5% Virtual
Premium $500 1% 1% Physical
Elite $2,500 3% 3% Physical
Private $25,000 5% 5% Metal
Bespoke $50,000 10% 8% Metal

Cashback is paid in USD. ATM withdrawals, cash advances, crypto purchases, gambling and a long list of financial merchant codes don't earn it 10. Higher tiers also add Earn rate boosts, 50% rebates on some subscriptions, and a monthly allowance of fee-free crypto trading 9.

The "up to 8%" headline therefore needs at least $50,000 in the app with $5,000 of it in WPAY. WPAY's price can fall, which can drop you to a lower tier and cut your cashback 8.

Earn accounts

Flexible Earn pays a variable rate weekly and allows withdrawals at any time; no interest accrues on a day your balance hits zero 11. Fixed Earn locks a rate for 1 to 24 months 11. Wirex advertises rates of "up to 9.75%" on stablecoins 11. The pages reviewed for this profile don't explain where the yield comes from or who the counterparty is. Ask before depositing, since that determines your risk.

Fees

Wirex One's terms point to a fees schedule that was not published at the link given as of October 23, 2026 3. What the help center states 79:

  • Foreign transaction fee on the card: free.
  • Trading: free up to your tier's monthly allowance, then a standard fee shown in the app.
  • Membership: no subscription fee.

The classic Wirex App had its own schedule — for example, free ATM withdrawals up to 200 GBP or EUR a month, then 2%, and a one-off GBP 30 charge when Wirex closes an account for terms violations 16. Treat those as legacy terms unless the app shows otherwise. Network fees apply to crypto sent to external wallets.

Where Wirex is available

The Wirex One card is available in the countries on Wirex's supported list, including the UK, EEA countries, Switzerland, Ukraine, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, the UAE, Nigeria, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico and others 5. The United States and Algeria are not on the list as of October 23, 2026 5.

Wirex prohibits use in or from sanctioned jurisdictions, including Russia, Belarus, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela and Lebanon, and forbids VPNs to get around restrictions 4. Self-custodial wallet features may work in more places than the card 5.

Security and support

Wirex One logs in with passkeys (Face ID or fingerprint) and lets you freeze the card in the app 126. The self-custodial wallet removes Wirex as custodian of your crypto but makes you responsible for authorizing every transaction 1. Wirex runs a public status page 19. Support runs through the in-app help center. Never share login codes with anyone contacting you first (phishing).
