Babylon Bitcoin Staking: How Babylon Protocol and Babylon Genesis Work

Babylon is a protocol for staking native bitcoin. You lock BTC in a time-locked script on the Bitcoin blockchain, and that stake helps secure proof-of-stake networks in exchange for rewards. The BTC never leaves the Bitcoin chain or your control, and it isn't wrapped or bridged 2. Babylon Labs builds the protocol. Its companion chain, Babylon Genesis, went live on April 10, 2025 and coordinates staking, slashing and rewards using the BABY token 38. The trade-off: staked BTC is locked for a period and can be partly slashed if the validator you choose misbehaves 2.

How Babylon Bitcoin staking works

Bitcoin has no native staking. Babylon adds it by using Bitcoin's own scripting language instead of moving coins to another chain 2.

  1. Choose a finality provider. Finality providers are operators who sign blocks on Babylon Genesis (and, later, other networks). Your BTC is delegated to one 23.
  2. Lock BTC in a staking script. You send BTC to a Bitcoin output that only your key can spend after a timelock. The same script has a slashing path that needs a covenant committee's signatures 2.
  3. Babylon Genesis records the stake. Off-chain relayers pass proof of the confirmed lock to Genesis, which activates the delegation 213.
  4. Earn rewards in BABY. Genesis distributes rewards to BTC stakers and BABY stakers 34.
  5. Unbond or wait for expiry. You can let the timelock run out or start early unbonding, then spend the BTC again 2.

The slashing mechanism uses extractable one-time signatures (EOTS). As the name suggests, a finality provider that breaks the signing rules exposes the key behind its signature, which lets a majority of the covenant committee execute the slashing path on the BTC delegated to it 2. Honest stakers always keep a withdrawal path, and unbonding does not need anyone's approval 2.

Babylon also lists a liquid staking path. Here, external protocols stake BTC and issue their own tokens; those protocols, not Babylon, run that layer 6. Integrators such as b14g build matching markets on top 13.

Babylon Genesis and the BABY token

Babylon Genesis is a Cosmos SDK chain that serves as the control layer for the protocol. Its consensus is "multi-staked": BTC stakers back finality providers, while BABY stakers delegate to regular CometBFT validators 3.

BABY is used for gas, governance votes and staking 3. Key token facts 4:

  • Supply: 10 billion at launch, inflation now 5.5% a year (cut from 8%).
  • Allocation: 30.5% early private investors, 18% ecosystem, 18% R&D and operations, 15% community incentives, 15% team, 3.5% advisors.
  • Unlocks: An amended schedule for investors, team and advisors started on May 10, 2026, with 1/36 unlocking monthly until April 2029.

At launch, rewards were split 50/50 between BTC stakers and BABY stakers, and 6% of supply went to early adopters 8.

Rewards and co-staking

Babylon does not publish a fixed APY. Rewards come from BABY inflation, so their value depends on the BABY price, total stake and validator commission.

Co-staking adds a separate reward pool equal to 2.35% of annual inflation for users who stake both BTC and BABY from the same BABY address 5. Your share depends on a weight equal to the smaller of your BTC stake and your BABY stake divided by 20,000. In practice, every 20,000 BABY makes 1 BTC eligible; BABY beyond that ratio adds nothing. For example, 1 BTC with 10,000 BABY counts as 0.5 BTC. Finality providers and validators cannot take commission on co-staking rewards 5.

Unbonding and withdrawal

There are two exits: wait for the stake's timelock to expire, or unbond early. Integrator documentation describes early unbonding on Babylon as 301 Bitcoin blocks, about three days, before the BTC becomes spendable 13. Bitcoin network fees apply to the staking, unbonding and withdrawal transactions. Use the official staking dashboard linked from babylonlabs.io to see current parameters.

History

  • August 2024: Phase 1 opens Bitcoin staking; base staking rewards only arrive with Phase 2 38.
  • April 10, 2025: Babylon Genesis mainnet and BABY launch, as the second of three phases 89.
  • April 11–24, 2025: Bitcoin staking is activated on Genesis in pilot mode, then becomes fully permissionless on April 24 9.
  • May 2025: More than 50,000 BTC staked; Babylon plans multi-staking to outside "Bitcoin Supercharged Networks" 9.
  • 2026: Trustless Bitcoin Vaults reach public testnet, starting with BTC-backed borrowing on Aave V4 1.

Risks to understand

  • Slashing. BTC delegated to a finality provider that double-signs can be partly forfeited 2. b14g's docs put the cap at 0.1% of the stake 13. Pick operators carefully.
  • Covenant committee. Slashing requires a committee's signatures, so the system relies on that group to act correctly 2.
  • Lock-up. BTC cannot be moved until the timelock ends or unbonding completes.
  • Reward value. Rewards are paid in BABY, which faces inflation and scheduled unlocks through 2029 4.
  • Software risk. Babylon lists eight audit engagements 7, but audits do not rule out bugs (see below).
  • Liquid staking tokens add a third party's contracts and redemption rules 6.
  • Phishing. Fake staking dashboards target BTC holders. Start from babylonlabs.io and never share a seed phrase.

Questions about Babylon

Does Babylon take custody of my bitcoin?
No. BTC stays on the Bitcoin chain in a script that only your key can spend after the timelock. The slashing path is the exception 2.
How long is the Babylon unbonding period?
Early unbonding takes about three days (301 Bitcoin blocks), according to integrator documentation 13. Check the current value on the official dashboard before staking.
What is the minimum amount of BTC to stake on Babylon?
Babylon's parameter pages could not be confirmed for this profile. Third-party platforms set their own minimums; b14g, for example, requires 0.01 BTC on Core chain 13. Very small stakes may be uneconomic after Bitcoin fees.
What is the BABY token used for?
Gas, governance and staking on Babylon Genesis. BTC and BABY stakers both earn BABY rewards, and co-staking adds a separate pool 345.
Has Babylon been audited?
Babylon's docs list eight audit engagements across Genesis chain releases and the staking frontend 7. DefiLlama's protocol page does not link any 12.
