GTBTC (Gate)

What Is GTBTC? Gate's Yield-Bearing Bitcoin Token Explained

GTBTC, or Gate Wrapped BTC, is a token issued by the crypto exchange Gate that represents bitcoin staked through Gate's earn product 14. You deposit BTC, Gate mints GTBTC, and the amount of BTC each GTBTC can be redeemed for rises over time as rewards are added 12. On October 23, 2026, one GTBTC was shown as worth about 1.0043 BTC 1. The key distinction: GTBTC is not native Bitcoin staking you control. Gate holds the BTC, chooses where the yield comes from, and backs the token with its own reserves 14.

How GTBTC works

GTBTC is an "exchange-rate" token. Instead of paying rewards as extra tokens, Gate raises the amount of BTC each GTBTC is worth 12:

  1. Stake BTC on Gate's BTC staking page. The minimum is 0.001 BTC 1.
  2. Receive GTBTC at the current rate. Your BTC balance in your Spot or Trading account falls and a GTBTC balance appears 1.
  3. Hold. Gate updates the rate each cycle, usually every 2–3 days. It stays fixed within a cycle 1.
  4. Redeem GTBTC for BTC at any time. Gate burns the GTBTC and releases the matching BTC 2. Redeeming right after a rate update captures that period's yield 2.

Worked example (illustrative, using the rate shown on October 23, 2026): at 1.004304 BTC per GTBTC, redeeming 1 GTBTC returns about 1.0043 BTC 1. The rate changes over time, so check it before you redeem.

GTBTC bought on the market earns the same way as GTBTC you mint 1. On Gate you can also trade it against USDT, use it as margin in a unified account, or post it as collateral for a loan 2.

Where the yield comes from

Gate says it puts staked BTC to work with several bitcoin DeFi projects. It converts the rewards to BTC and passes them on through the rate 12. Gate does not name those projects on its GTBTC pages 12.

The rate shown varies by page and over time. The staking page showed an estimated 2.67% APR on October 23, 2026 1, while the GTBTC page showed a 0% placeholder 2. In April 2025 Gate advertised a 2% base APR, with a temporary 1% bonus for completing Web3 wallet tasks 5. Treat any figure as an estimate, not a promise.

For background, see liquid staking and restaking. Bitcoin itself has no native staking, so "BTC staking" products always rely on extra protocols or on the issuer.

Custody, reserves and risks

GTBTC is a claim on Gate. The BTC behind it sits with Gate, not in a wallet you control 14. Gate is a custodial exchange that publishes proof-of-reserves reports, and it says GTBTC is fully backed with an excess reserve 16. A reserve report is a snapshot of assets against customer balances. It is not a full audit of Gate's finances.

Main risks to weigh:

  • Issuer risk. Redemption depends on Gate operating normally and honoring withdrawals 1.
  • Strategy risk. Yield comes from unnamed third-party DeFi projects, whose losses could affect returns 1.
  • Smart-contract risk. Gate says minting and redemption run through audited smart contracts but does not link a report on the GTBTC page 2. DefiLlama lists no audits for GTBTC 3.
  • Market price vs rate. Buying or selling GTBTC on a market can happen at a price that differs from Gate's redemption rate.
  • Access. Gate's global platform excludes US persons, so US residents cannot mint or redeem there 6.

On-chain presence

GTBTC exists as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum at 0xc2d09cf86b9ff43cb29ef8ddca57a4eb4410d5f3 4. Gate also describes it as a key part of Gate Layer, its own network 1. DefiLlama attributes all of its value locked to Bitcoin, which reflects the BTC held behind the token 3. Always confirm a contract address with Gate before buying on-chain; look-alike tokens are common.

Who issues GTBTC

GTBTC is issued by Gate. Data sites list the issuer as Gate Web3 4. Gate, formerly Gate.io, is a centralized exchange that dates its founding to 2013. Its global platform and its regional licensed entities are covered in our Gate company profile 6. The earliest dated reference to GTBTC we found is Gate's April 2025 BTC staking launch, which paid rewards in GTBTC 5.
