Grim Finance fork exploit and Beefy whitehat response

Beefy (long known as Beefy Finance) is a decentralized yield optimizer. You deposit tokens into a Beefy "vault", and its smart contracts repeatedly harvest the farming rewards and reinvest them into the same position. Beefy does not hold user funds or lock them up: you can withdraw at any time 2. Since its first vaults opened in October 2020, the protocol has expanded to dozens of blockchains 17. It is run by anonymous contributors and governed by holders of its BIFI token, and no legal company or headquarters has been disclosed 1. One point is easy to miss: Beefy's displayed APY is already net of its performance fee, and the fee is taken from profits, not from your deposit 2.
Beefy is a set of vault and strategy contracts deployed separately on each blockchain it supports, plus a web app that puts them all in one interface. Each vault follows a single strategy: for example, supplying a token to a lending market or providing liquidity to a DEX pool and collecting the reward tokens 2.
The team works pseudonymously. Beefy's docs say contributors stay anonymous "even among itself", though some appear at conferences and share identity details with partners when integrations require it. No home country is given 1. Decisions are made through Beefy Improvement Proposals (BIPs) and Snapshot votes weighted by BIFI holdings 4.
Beefy's newer product, the Cowcentrated Liquidity Manager (CLM), automatically manages concentrated-liquidity DEX positions. It has its own audits 5.
Beefy's main charge is a performance fee on harvested profits. The displayed APY already has it subtracted 2. According to Beefy's fee breakdown 3:
| Fee | Rate | Goes to |
|---|---|---|
| Performance fee, typical vault | 4.05% of harvest profits | 3.0% BIFI stakers, 0.5% treasury, 0.5% strategist, 0.05% harvest caller |
| Performance fee, vaults created after BIP:45 | up to 9.5% of harvest profits | ~3.06–3.24% BIFI stakers, ~5.44–5.75% treasury, 0.5% strategist, 0.01–0.5% caller |
| Withdrawal fee | up to 0.1%, only on vaults that do not "harvest on deposit" | Stays in the vault for remaining depositors |
| Zap fee | 0.05% of zapped amount | Treasury |
| Network gas | varies | Blockchain validators, not Beefy |
Illustration with assumed numbers: if a vault harvests $100 of rewards and charges 4.05%, about $4.05 goes to fees and $95.95 is compounded for depositors. Your principal is not charged. Gas for deposits, withdrawals and zaps is a separate cost, and on Ethereum it can outweigh the gains on small deposits. See our explainer on gas fees.
BIFI is Beefy's governance and revenue-share token. Its supply is fixed at 80,000, and all of it has been in circulation since July 2022. In 2023 the Multichain cross-chain bridge failed. Under BIP:71 Beefy then reissued BIFI on Ethereum, completing the move in September 2023, with a non-mintable contract audited by Zellic. Protocol revenue from all chains is routed to Ethereum and paid to BIFI stakers in the BIFI Vault (mooBIFI, rewards compound) or the BIFI Pool (rBIFI, rewards paid in ETH) 4. Those payouts depend on protocol revenue and are not fixed.
Because a Beefy vault sits on top of other protocols, it adds a layer of risk:
Beefy is permissionless. No KYC is required to use its contracts, and access depends on your wallet and local law. Use only the official domain linked from Beefy's verified channels. Yield-app clones are a common phishing tactic.
Hacks in DefiLlama’s public database are also scored as the security record on the Beefy rating page.
