What Is MyEtherWallet (MEW)? Products, Fees, Security and History

MEW has moved from a single web page into three wallets that share one recovery model ¹:

• MEW Portfolio (web). This is the dashboard at myetherwallet.com and works with "any crypto wallet". You connect MEW Mobile, Enkrypt, a hardware wallet such as Ledger or Trezor, or another extension. From there you can view balances, send, swap, bridge, stake, add custom tokens and use dapps ¹².
• MEW Mobile. An iOS and Android app that holds its own keys. It supports Bitcoin, Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens, Solana, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Polygon, zkSync Era and BNB Smart Chain ².
• Enkrypt. A multichain browser extension in the same role as MetaMask. MEW recommends it, MEW Mobile or a hardware wallet over pasting a key into a web page ⁷.

In 2026, MEW Portfolio added two newer features:

• Tokenized US stocks and ETFs, supplied by Ondo ⁴.
• Perpetual futures via Ondo Perps. Perps are not available to US residents and accept only USDC on Ethereum as collateral, held in a separate perps balance ⁶.

Setting up MEW means creating a wallet in MEW Mobile or Enkrypt, then backing up the recovery phrase before sending any funds ⁹. To use the web dashboard, open myetherwallet.com, choose "Connect wallet" and pick your wallet type ⁴.

The web interface still accepts a keystore file, a recovery (mnemonic) phrase or a raw private key. MEW labels each of these "NOT a recommended way" to access a wallet, because typing a key into a browser exposes it to phishing pages and malware ⁷. If you insist on those methods, MEW says to run its interface offline, that is, downloaded and used locally ⁷⁸.

MEW itself charges nothing to create a wallet or hold assets. What you pay depends on the action:

MEW does not publish a single swap-fee percentage in the help articles reviewed, and ethereum.org lists its swap fee as "variable" ¹². In practice, the quoted amount you will receive is the number to compare. For how gas is priced, see gas fees.

MEW stores no private keys, passwords or emails, so it cannot do any of the following ⁹:

• recover a lost phrase or key file;
• reset a password;
• reverse a transaction;
• move funds on your behalf.

The flip side is portability. If MEW went offline, the same phrase or key would restore the wallet in another compatible wallet ⁸. For the concepts, see public and private keys and self-custody.

Risks MEW cannot remove for you:

• Phishing and look-alike domains. These are the main threat, as the 2018 incident below showed ¹³. Bookmark myetherwallet.com and never ignore a browser certificate warning.
• Fake "MEW" tokens and airdrops. MEW has no token ³.
• Unofficial apps. "Modded" APKs are not distributed by MEW. Install from the official app stores or mewwallet.com.
• Support impersonators. No genuine support agent will ask for your recovery phrase. See crypto phishing.

Kosala Hemachandra and Taylor Monahan started MyEtherWallet in 2015 as an open-source web tool for creating Ethereum wallets ¹¹⁴. In February 2018, Monahan left to launch the rival MyCrypto, taking much of the team with her. Hemachandra kept control of MEW's code repository, domain and infrastructure ¹⁴. Since then MEW has added the mobile app, Enkrypt, the ethVM explorer and, in 2026, Ondo-powered stock and perps features ¹⁴⁶. Its code remains public on GitHub ¹.
