Zerion
Zerion is a self-custody crypto wallet and DeFi portfolio tracker launched in 2016 and based in San Francisco. It runs as an iOS and Android app and a browser extension, covering Ethereum and dozens of EVM chains, and reads your on-chain positions — pools, staking, lending and rewards — in one view. Because it is non-custodial, your keys and recovery phrase stay on your device: nobody at Zerion can move or recover your funds. The wallet code has not been breached to drain users, though the company has had a social-account takeover and an internal-wallet breach that did not touch user keys.

What is Zerion?
Zerion is two things in one app: a self-custody wallet where you hold your own keys, and a portfolio tracker that reads what your addresses already own on-chain. Launched in 2016 and built by a San Francisco team, it works across Ethereum and 50+ EVM-compatible chains such as Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Polygon and BNB Chain, and it can watch any address you paste in without holding its keys.
The tracking side is what sets it apart from a plain wallet: instead of showing only token balances, it surfaces your DeFi positions — liquidity pools, staked assets, lending balances, debts and rewards — pulled straight from the chains. You can hold and swap through it, connect it to dApps, or use it purely to monitor wallets you keep elsewhere.
Is Zerion safe?
As a non-custodial wallet, Zerion holds no user funds centrally and its published code has third-party audits behind it. Your keys and recovery phrase are encrypted on your own device, which moves the real risk from the company to you: a phishing site or fake support that coaxes out your recovery phrase, or a malicious signing request you approve without reading, can drain a wallet no matter how the app is built. No legitimate Zerion staff will ever ask for your recovery phrase.
Where Zerion has been hit is around the wallet rather than inside it. In 2023 its official X account was briefly taken over and used to post phishing links, and in 2026 a team member's device was compromised in a social-engineering attack that reached internal company hot wallets. In both cases user private keys and customer funds held in the wallet were not affected; both are set out in the incident record below.
Incident record
Zerion's official X account was briefly compromised and used to post fake 'airdrop' links leading to a phishing site. Users who interacted lost roughly $2,776 in ETH, $18,293 in ERC-20 tokens and $3,757 in NFTs, and about $53,000 was drained from a compromised internal address; no user private keys were affected. Zerion regained access, removed the posts, revoked employee access, and committed to reimburse affected users.
A North Korea-linked attacker used AI-assisted social engineering to compromise a team member's device, gaining access to logged-in sessions, credentials and internal hot-wallet keys and taking about $100,000 in company funds. No user funds were affected. Zerion disabled its web app as a precaution, rotated potentially exposed credentials and reconfigured its multi-signature accounts.

Frequently asked
Is Zerion safe?+
Zerion is a non-custodial wallet: it holds no funds centrally, its code has been audited, and your keys and recovery phrase stay encrypted on your device. That shifts the risk to you — phishing that asks for your recovery phrase, or malicious signing requests. Its two known incidents (a 2023 X-account takeover and a 2026 internal-wallet breach) did not compromise user keys or wallet funds.
Is Zerion custodial or non-custodial?+
Non-custodial. Your private keys and recovery phrase are generated and stored on your own device, and nobody at Zerion can move, freeze or recover your funds. That is also why protecting your recovery phrase yourself is essential: there is no support line that can reverse a theft.
Which chains and platforms does Zerion support?+
Zerion runs as an iOS and Android app and a browser extension, and works across Ethereum and 50+ EVM-compatible chains such as Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Polygon and BNB Chain. It also acts as a portfolio tracker, reading DeFi positions across any address you add.
