What Is the Optimism Bridge? How OP Mainnet's Standard Bridge Works

The Optimism Bridge is the official, or "canonical," bridge between Ethereum and OP Mainnet. It is a set of smart contracts called the Standard Bridge, and it moves ETH and standard ERC-20 tokens between the two chains 1.

Deposits to OP Mainnet usually arrive in 1–3 minutes. Withdrawals back to Ethereum take about 7 days, because they must pass a fault-proof challenge period 12.

Optimism no longer runs its own bridge website. Its bridge page sends users to independent front ends such as Superbridge 6.

What the Optimism Bridge is, and isn't

The bridge is not a company or a service with an account. It is a pair of contracts that pass messages through Optimism's CrossDomainMessenger 1:

  • L1StandardBridge on Ethereum;
  • L2StandardBridge on OP Mainnet.

Anyone can call them directly or through an interface 1.

It is also distinct from third-party bridges that serve OP Mainnet, such as liquidity networks that pay you out on the other chain within minutes. Those use their own pools and trust assumptions. The canonical bridge relies only on Ethereum and OP Mainnet's proof system.

Where to bridge now

Optimism took down its own bridge interface. It says not running a front end increases decentralization and grows the ecosystem 6. The app.optimism.io bridge page now links to these options 6:

  • Superbridge, built by Blob Engineering, which Optimism features prominently;
  • other OP Stack bridges.

Optimism describes all of them as independent third parties it is not responsible for 6. Superbridge and similar apps use the canonical contracts for standard deposits and withdrawals, but each sets its own interface and any extra fees.

Bridge front ends are frequently cloned by phishers. Reach them from app.optimism.io and remember no one legitimate will ask for your seed phrase (crypto phishing).

How deposits and withdrawals work

Depositing (Ethereum → OP Mainnet) 1:

  1. Send ETH or approve and send an ERC-20 to the L1StandardBridge. You pay Ethereum gas.
  2. ETH: the bridge credits ETH on OP Mainnet.
  3. ERC-20: the bridge locks the token on Ethereum and mints a bridged version on OP Mainnet ("lock-and-mint").
  4. Funds normally appear in 1–3 minutes.

Withdrawing (OP Mainnet → Ethereum) takes three transactions 13:

  1. Initiate on OP Mainnet. The bridged tokens are burned.
  2. Prove on Ethereum once the relevant OP Mainnet state has been posted, typically about an hour later. Proving starts the challenge window.
  3. Finalize on Ethereum after the 7-day window. The original tokens are unlocked.

You pay Ethereum gas for both the prove and finalize steps. Ordinary OP Mainnet transactions do not wait 7 days. They reach hard finality on Ethereum in about 15–30 minutes. The delay applies only to withdrawals through the Standard Bridge 2.

Costs

The Standard Bridge contracts charge no protocol bridge fee in Optimism's documentation; you pay network gas 1. In practice the costs are:

  • Ethereum gas for a deposit;
  • OP Mainnet gas plus two Ethereum transactions (prove and finalize) for a withdrawal.

Third-party front ends may add their own fees. Faster third-party bridges skip the 7-day wait in exchange for a fee or spread and different risks.

Tokens, USDC and wrong-address risk

Only standard ERC-20 tokens work. Tokens that charge a fee on transfer or change balances automatically ("rebasing") are not supported 1. A single Ethereum token can have more than one bridged version on OP Mainnet, and sending to the wrong one can lock funds permanently 1. Optimism maintains a Superchain Token List of correct addresses 1.

USDC is the common case. Circle issues native USDC on OP Mainnet at 0x0b2C639c533813f4Aa9D7837CAf62653d097Ff85 7. An older bridged USDC also circulates, and it is a different token. Check which one an app or exchange expects. Circle is profiled here.

Security model

The bridge is only as secure as the system that decides which withdrawals are valid. Since June 10, 2024, OP Mainnet has used permissionless fault proofs. Anyone can propose the chain state that withdrawals rely on, and anyone can challenge an invalid one during the 7-day window 4. Optimism describes this as "Stage 1" decentralization 4.

There are two important caveats:

  • Security Council override. The Security Council can step in and revert the system to permissioned proofs. If that happens, pending withdrawals must be re-proven, which adds delay 4.
  • Contract risk. DefiLlama lists no audit links for the bridge entry 8. That reflects a database field, not the absence of reviews. Smart-contract bugs remain a risk, as the 2024 audit findings showed 5.

Questions about Optimism (OP Mainnet) Bridge

Can I bridge from Optimism to Arbitrum, Base or Polygon with the Optimism Bridge?
Not directly. The canonical bridge connects OP Mainnet only with Ethereum 1. For Arbitrum or Polygon you would withdraw to Ethereum, which takes 7 days, then bridge again, or use a third-party bridge. Optimism's bridge page lists OP Stack bridge options, including routes to other OP Stack chains such as Base 6.
What is the USDC contract address on Optimism?
Native USDC on OP Mainnet is 0x0b2C639c533813f4Aa9D7837CAf62653d097Ff85, per Circle 7.
Why is my withdrawal taking 7 days?
That is the fault-proof challenge window. After proving, you must wait about 7 days, then send a separate finalize transaction on Ethereum 13.
Is there an official Optimism bridge website?
Not one run by Optimism. app.optimism.io/bridge links to independent front ends such as Superbridge 6.
