Zengo Wallet: How the Seedless MPC Crypto Wallet Works

Zengo is a self-custodial mobile crypto wallet that has no seed phrase. Instead of one private key, it splits signing power into two "secret shares": one on your phone and one on Zengo's servers. Both must cooperate to sign a transaction 12. The wallet is made by Zengo Ltd., co-founded by Ouriel Ohayon and Tal Be'ery and operating since 2018; its website terms are governed by Israeli law 1910. That design removes the risk of a stolen or lost seed phrase, but it adds one people often miss: you depend on Zengo's server to send funds, and on your email and cloud backup to recover 235.

How Zengo's MPC key model works

A traditional wallet derives every key from a 12- or 24-word seed phrase (see public and private keys). Whoever has those words has the funds. Zengo replaces that with multi-party computation (MPC), a cryptographic method where two parties jointly produce a valid signature without either revealing its secret 12.

  1. Wallet creation. The app creates a Personal Share on your phone, and Zengo creates a Remote Share on its servers 1.
  2. Sending. You start a transaction on your phone. The two shares run a joint signing process and output an ordinary blockchain signature 2.
  3. Control. Zengo says it cannot move your funds alone because it never has your device share 2. Equally, you cannot sign without Zengo's server taking part 5.

Zengo says its MPC library is open source and audited 12. The company states that no Zengo wallet has been hacked since 2018 1. That is Zengo's own claim; independent databases checked list no Zengo incident 12, which is the absence of a record rather than proof.

Recovery: what you need if you lose your phone

Zengo calls its backup the Recovery Kit. You must set it up before depositing funds 3.

  • Email address you used to create the wallet (a secondary email can be added) 23.
  • Recovery file, stored automatically in iCloud Drive (iPhone) or Google Drive (Android), with optional Dropbox or extra cloud copies. The file alone cannot access the wallet 3.
  • 3D FaceLock, an encrypted face scan. Since May 23, 2024 it is optional for recovery but required for Zengo Pro security features. A trusted friend's face can be added as a backup 3.

Some zengo.com pages still describe all three as required ("3FA"); the help center describes the current rule 13.

The weak points are concrete. Zengo cannot restore a lost recovery file, and editing or moving the file can make the account unrecoverable 3. Losing access to both your email and your cloud account is the main lockout scenario, which is why Zengo recommends adding secondary ones 2. Never share the recovery file or email access with anyone claiming to be support.

If Zengo shuts down. Because the server share is needed to sign, Zengo says it runs a "guaranteed access service performed by independent companies" to let users reach their funds if the company stops operating 2. The help article does not name those companies, so the arrangement cannot be checked from public documents.

Zengo Pro and costs

The core wallet is free. Zengo Pro costs $19.99 a month or $89.99 a year as of October 23, 2026 4. It adds 45:

  • Theft Guard, which requires a face scan for outgoing transactions, so a thief with your unlocked phone cannot send funds.
  • Legacy Transfer, which passes assets to a chosen contact after a period of inactivity you set.
  • Web3 Firewall warnings for risky transactions and dApp approvals.
  • Up to five separate wallets, a Bitcoin privacy mode and Bitcoin "vaults".
  • Discounts of up to 50% on buy fees and faster support.

Other costs come from partners and networks. Buying crypto runs through Banxa, MoonPay, Transak and similar providers, each with its own fees 6. In-app swaps route through partners such as Changelly and THORChain, and the quote is net of their fees 7. Every on-chain transfer also pays the network's fee. Zengo does not publish a single fee table, so compare the final quote before confirming.

Features and supported networks

Zengo supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, TRON and other networks, plus NFTs, WalletConnect connections to dApps, ETH staking and a recently added prediction-markets feature that connects to Polymarket 8. The main app is mobile; a web login and a separate Zengo Business product for company treasuries also exist 8. Support is in-app, which Zengo says runs 24/7 8.

How Zengo differs from seed-phrase wallets

Compared with a seed-phrase app such as Trust Wallet, Zengo removes the single most phished secret in crypto, at the price of relying on a company server. A seed-phrase wallet can be restored in any compatible app without its maker; Zengo cannot, because there is no seed to export 5. Which trade-off suits you depends on whether you fear losing a written phrase more than depending on one provider. Our guide to self-custody explains the broader options.

Incident record

No security incident involving Zengo's own wallet infrastructure was found in Zengo's disclosures, the DefiLlama hacks database or the press coverage checked 112. Zengo states that no wallet has been hacked since 2018 1. Verdict: No known incidents in sources checked.

No security incident found in the sources checked as of October 23, 2026. That is a dated observation, not a promise that none has happened.

Hacks in DefiLlama’s public database are also scored as the security record on the Zengo rating page.

Questions about Zengo

Is Zengo wallet safe?
Zengo removes seed-phrase theft by design and says no wallet has been hacked since 2018 1. The remaining risks are phishing for your email or cloud account, approving malicious dApp transactions, and dependence on Zengo's server to sign 25. Theft Guard and the Web3 Firewall in Zengo Pro target some of these 4.
Is Zengo custodial?
No. Zengo cannot sign alone, and you cannot sign without Zengo's server: it is a joint, two-share model 25.
Can I export a seed phrase from Zengo?
No. Zengo wallets have no seed phrase, so moving to another wallet means sending your assets on-chain 5.
What happens if I lose my phone?
Install Zengo on a new phone, log in to the same cloud account and email, and pass FaceLock if you set it up 3.
Does Zengo have a token?
No. Zengo does not issue a token; any "Zengo token" offer should be treated as a scam. See our guide to crypto phishing.
