Frame Wallet: The Open-Source Ethereum Wallet for Desktop

Frame is a free, open-source Ethereum wallet that runs as a desktop app on macOS, Windows and Linux rather than as a browser extension 16. It is self-custodial: keys stay on your computer or on a connected Ledger, Trezor or GridPlus device. Frame also exposes a wallet connection to every app on your machine, including browsers, command-line tools and native programs 4. It works with any EVM chain 610. One thing to know before installing: as of October 23, 2026, Frame's GitHub repository is archived. The last release, v0.6.11, shipped in February 2025 12.

What Frame is

Frame is a wallet and signing layer that sits in your menu bar or system tray. Most Ethereum wallets live inside one browser. Frame runs as its own application and serves a local connection at 127.0.0.1:1248. Any program that speaks Ethereum JSON-RPC can use it to request accounts and signatures 4. Developers can point scripts or desktop apps at Frame. Ordinary users connect it to websites through the companion extension.

Frame is published by Frame Labs, Inc., according to the website footer 5. The code has been public since March 2018 under the GPL-3.0 license 1. There is no Frame token.

How Frame works

  1. Install. Download the installer from frame.sh or the GitHub releases page. Frame's docs recommend checking the installer's SHA-512 hash against the .yml file published with each release before running it 7.
  2. Add a signer. Frame does not hold keys on a server. You either connect a hardware wallet (Ledger, Trezor or GridPlus Lattice1) or import a software signer: a seed phrase, a single private key or a keystore JSON file 9. Imported seed phrases become a "hot signer", which you unlock with a separate password of at least 12 characters. That password is not part of your private key and does not replace your seed backup 8. When the docs were checked, in-app creation of brand-new seed phrases was still described as "coming soon". In practice, you bring a seed phrase from another wallet or use a hardware device 8.
  3. Choose chains. Frame ships with popular networks and testnets preloaded. You can add any EVM chain by hand or through Chainlist, and set your own RPC endpoints 10. Its "omnichain routing" lets a dapp send requests for different chains at the same time, without you switching networks in the wallet 45.
  4. Approve and sign. Each new site has to ask for permission, and you can review or revoke it in the Dapps module 41112. Before you sign, Frame decodes the transaction data using verified contract ABIs and shows a readable summary 45. "Watch Only" accounts let you explore the interface without adding keys 5.

Frame Companion browser extension

Websites expect a wallet to inject itself into the page. Frame's Companion extension for Chrome and Firefox does this by passing an EIP-1193 provider (window.ethereum) through to the desktop app 46. An "Appear as MetaMask" option helps with dapps that only recognize MetaMask 5. Frame's support docs note that other wallet extensions compete for the same window.ethereum object. Brave's built-in wallet takes priority by default, so disabling it is the usual fix when Frame does not connect 11.

Costs

Frame is free to download and use, and its code is free software 15. No Frame fee page was found in its documentation. What you do pay is network gas to the blockchain for each transaction. The app's Chain Monitor shows average gas per chain 12. If a dapp or swap aggregator you reach through Frame charges a fee, that charge comes from the dapp, not Frame.

Security model and limits

  • Self-custody. Frame never takes control of your funds. Anyone with your seed phrase or private key can take them, and Frame cannot recover a lost seed. Hardware signers keep keys off the computer. Hot signers keep them on the computer behind a password 89.
  • Audits. frame.sh says the app has been audited by Cure53 and Doyensec 5. No audit reports or dates were found on Frame's site or docs, so treat this as a company statement.
  • Unmaintained software. The GitHub repository is archived, and nothing has been released since February 2025 12. That means no new security patches, hardware-wallet firmware compatibility updates or operating-system fixes should be expected. Desktop wallets depend on all three. Treat this as a material factor for any wallet holding meaningful value.
  • Download hygiene. Install only from frame.sh or the official GitHub releases, and verify the hash 7. Never type a seed phrase into a site or a "support" chat. Frame support ran through its Discord #support channel 11. See our guide to crypto phishing.

Open source and development status

Frame's code was developed in public from 2018 under GPL-3.0. That allowed independent review and builds from source 14. Release activity slowed after v0.6.8 (August 2023) and v0.6.9 (March 2024). Two maintenance releases, v0.6.10 and v0.6.11, came in January and February 2025 2. The final commits fixed Linux packaging, Ubuntu menus and Trezor USB transport 3. When we checked on October 23, 2026, the repository was flagged archived and frame.sh still offered v0.6.11 for download 15. No official statement explaining the archive was found. Users still running Frame may want to plan a move to a maintained software wallet or keep funds on a hardware wallet that can also be used with a different interface.

Desktop-adjacent alternatives that cover similar ground in different ways include MetaMask and Rabby (browser-based). Hardware users can also use Ledger or Trezor companion apps directly.

Incident record

2 outcome unclear

No security incident affecting Frame users found in sources checked (to October 23, 2026).

outcome unclear
No exploit, key leak or malicious release involving Frame was found in Frame's docs, GitHub releases or a web search on the checked date. That does not prove none occurred. Losses from phishing or malicious token approvals happen at the user level and are not Frame-specific.
Outcome
No recorded incident.

Development wind-down

repository archived (status confirmed October 23, 2026)outcome unclear
This was not a security event. The source repository is now read-only, and the last release was February 3, 2025 12.
Outcome
Ongoing operational risk. The software still runs, but it is not receiving updates.

Questions about Frame

Is Frame wallet still maintained?
It does not appear to be. As of October 23, 2026, the GitHub repository is archived and the latest release is v0.6.11 from February 2025 12.
Can I use Frame with a Ledger or Trezor?
Yes. Frame supports Ledger, Trezor and GridPlus Lattice1 as signers, so keys stay on the device 9.
Does Frame work with chains other than Ethereum?
Yes, with EVM chains. Frame preloads common networks and lets you add any EVM chain with custom RPCs. It does not support non-EVM chains such as Bitcoin or Solana 610.
Do I need the browser extension?
Only for websites. Desktop and command-line apps can connect to Frame's local endpoint directly. Websites need the Frame Companion extension for Chrome or Firefox 46.
Does Frame charge fees?
No Frame fee was found. The app is free and open source; you pay only blockchain gas and any fees charged by the dapps you use 15.
