Rocket Pool

What Is Rocket Pool? rETH, Node Operators and How It Works

Rocket Pool is a decentralized Ethereum staking protocol. It brings together two groups. Stakers can deposit as little as 0.01 ETH and receive rETH, a token whose value rises against ETH as validators earn rewards 1. Node operators run the validators. Each one puts up a 4 ETH bond and is matched with 28 ETH from the stakers' pool 3. Anyone can join as an operator; no one has to be approved 10. David Rugendyke started the project in late 2016, and it launched on Ethereum mainnet in 2021 6. The RPL token gives governance votes and a share of protocol revenue to operators who stake it 3.

How staking with rETH works

  1. Deposit ETH. Connect a wallet to the Rocket Pool staking site and swap ETH for rETH. The minimum is 0.01 ETH and there is no maximum 16.
  2. ETH is matched with operators. Deposited ETH goes into a pool. Node operators draw 28 ETH from it, add their own 4 ETH bond, and start a 32 ETH Ethereum validator 3.
  3. Rewards build up in rETH's price. Validators earn consensus rewards, priority fees and MEV. Those earnings, minus the operator commission, push up the rETH/ETH exchange rate. The rate is updated about once a day 1. Your rETH balance stays the same while each token becomes redeemable for more ETH.
  4. Use or exit. rETH is a standard ERC-20 token, so you can hold it, trade it, lend it or post it as collateral. To get out, you burn it for ETH through the protocol or sell it on an exchange 1.

You don't have to mint rETH yourself. Buying it on a DEX or on a layer 2 gives you the same exposure 1.

Two routes in the staking app. The protocol route deals with Rocket Pool's contracts directly. You get exactly the rETH your ETH is worth, minus a 0.05% deposit fee, with no slippage. It is limited by how much the deposit pool can take in and by how much ETH is available when you unstake. The CoW Swap route fills your order through a third-party DEX aggregator. It is mainnet-only, isn't part of the protocol, and can carry slippage 2.

Running a node

Node operators run their own Ethereum validator software with Rocket Pool's Smart Node stack. Since the Saturn 1 upgrade:

  • one megapool contract per operator holds many validators;
  • each validator needs a 4 ETH bond (previously 8 ETH);
  • new legacy minipools can no longer be created 37;
  • operators no longer have to stake RPL. Saturn 0, in October 2024, had already removed the RPL requirement for new minipools 4.

If an operator's validator underperforms or gets slashed, the operator's bond absorbs the loss first. Any loss the bond doesn't cover is spread across all rETH holders through a lower exchange rate 8.

Fees and rewards

Who pays Charge Notes
Stakers using the protocol route 0.05% deposit fee 2 Plus Ethereum gas. DEX routes have swap fees and slippage instead
Stakers (via rETH rate) 14% of rewards earned on pooled ETH 7 5% base to node operators + 9% "voter share" to operators who stake RPL, paid in ETH. pDAO can change the split; the treasury share is currently 0% 3
Legacy minipools Commission set in each minipool contract 7 Not part of the Saturn 1 split

Rocket Pool doesn't publish a fixed APR. Your return depends on Ethereum's staking yield, MEV and the commission, and you see it as growth in the rETH/ETH rate 1. Check the current figure on the staking site or a public data tracker rather than relying on a quoted number.

Saturn 1: what changed in 2026

According to Crypto Briefing, Saturn 1 went live on mainnet on February 18, 2026 5. The docs call it the largest upgrade in the protocol's history 3. Main changes:

  • Megapools and 4 ETH bonds. The same amount of bonded ETH now backs more validators 3.
  • RPL revenue share. Staked RPL now earns a share of protocol revenue, paid in ETH (9%), on top of continuing RPL inflation rewards 3.
  • Adjustable revenue split (UARS). Governance can now change commission shares without a new contract release 3.
  • rETH liquidity buffer. Part of the ETH from new rETH mints stays in the rETH contract, up to about 1% of rETH TVL. The rest goes to the deposit pool. This keeps more ETH on hand for redemptions 3.
  • Guardrails. There are now limits on how often the Oracle DAO can update the rETH rate, a cap on MEV penalties, and a delay before passed upgrades take effect. The delay gives users time to exit, and the security council can veto an upgrade 3.

Saturn 2 is not live. In September–October 2026, voters backed a design that would force randomly selected megapool validators to exit when rETH redemptions need ETH. They also voted to keep the 4 ETH bond. A devnet was expected in late October 2026, and mainnet deployment has been discussed for 2027 12.

Getting ETH back

  • Burn rETH through the protocol. This only works when the rETH contract or the deposit pool has enough ETH. That ETH comes from new deposits not yet matched to a validator, from the Saturn 1 buffer and from validator exits. If none is available, the app reports insufficient liquidity 123.
  • Sell rETH on a DEX or through the CoW Swap route. This works at any time, but you get the market price, which can be slightly below rETH's ETH value 12.

Rocket Pool has no lock-up period for stakers 6.

Governance and trust assumptions

Rocket Pool's governance has three parts:

  • Protocol DAO (pDAO): node operators, voting with RPL-based voting power, either off-chain on RocketDash or through on-chain proposals. It controls parameters such as bond size and the revenue split 311.
  • Oracle DAO (oDAO): an invite-only group of nodes. It moves validator balances from the Beacon Chain onto Ethereum, builds the rewards data, checks new validators' withdrawal credentials, and proposes and votes on contract upgrades 10. rETH's exchange rate depends on the oDAO reporting honestly. The Saturn 1 guardrails limit how often it can change the rate 3.
  • Security council: can act on upgrades, including vetoing them 311.

Security and risks

  • Audits and code. The contracts are open source. Sigma Prime and ConsenSys Diligence audited them before the 2021 launch. Cantina, Bailsec and Sigma Prime audited Saturn 1. A public Immunefi bounty pays up to $150,000 39. Audits reduce risk but don't guarantee safety.
  • Slashing and underperformance. Operator bonds absorb losses first. Large losses can still lower rETH's value 8.
  • Oracle and governance risk. rETH pricing depends on reports from the Oracle DAO 10.
  • Liquidity risk. Redeeming through the protocol depends on available ETH 1.
  • Smart-contract and integration risk when you use rETH in other DeFi apps.
  • Phishing. The official rETH contract on Ethereum is 0xae78736Cd615f374D3085123A210448E74Fc6393 2. Never share a seed phrase.

Questions about Rocket Pool

How is Rocket Pool different from Lido?
Anyone with a 4 ETH bond can become a Rocket Pool node operator 37. Lido works with node operators selected through its own governance. Rocket Pool's rETH also keeps a fixed balance while its value grows 1.
What is the current rETH APR?
It changes over time. You see it as the rETH/ETH exchange rate rising, net of the 14% commission 17. Check the live figure on Rocket Pool's site or a data tracker.
Do I need RPL to stake with Rocket Pool?
No. Stakers only need ETH. Since Saturn 1, node operators don't need RPL either, but staking RPL earns them the 9% voter share 37.
Is there a lock-up when I stake?
No. You can trade rETH at any time. Burning it through the protocol depends on available ETH liquidity 16.
Where can I see Rocket Pool's TVL?
Rocket Pool's own dashboards and DefiLlama's Rocket Pool page track it. The figure moves with ETH prices and deposits.
