What Is edgeX? How the edgeX Perpetual DEX Works, Fees and Access
edgeX is a decentralized exchange for perpetual futures and spot trading. It runs an order book with off-chain matching and settles trades through its own rollup chain, which anchors to Ethereum 13. Traders connect a wallet or sign in with email, fund an account with USDT and trade crypto perpetuals, plus perpetuals tracking stocks, forex and commodities 16. edgeX describes itself as self-custodial. Its Terms of Use block anyone in the United States or Canada from the interface 14. The exchange has a governance and staking token, EDGE, which launched in March 2026 1215.

Who runs edgeX
edgeX's Terms of Use name edgeX Trading Inc. and its affiliates as the operator, without saying where the company is incorporated. California law governs, and disputes go to arbitration in San Francisco 14.
Crypto media describe edgeX as backed by the trading firm Amber Group 15. edgeX's own homepage lists Circle Ventures, the venture arm of USDC issuer Circle, as a backer 1. Neither source states how much was invested.
How trading on edgeX works
edgeX works like a centralized exchange on the surface: a central limit order book, limit and market orders, and take-profit and stop-loss orders. Under the surface, settlement happens on a blockchain layer 12.
- Matching off-chain. Orders are matched by edgeX's engine, which the company says handles up to 300,000 orders a second with latency under 100 ms 1.
- Settlement on a layer 2. In V1, trades settled through StarkWare's StarkEx engine, which posts zero-knowledge validity proofs to Ethereum. edgeX's docs describe that design as a validium, meaning transaction data is kept off Ethereum 23. In V2, edgeX moved to its own modular rollup, built with the Arbitrum stack, which anchors transaction batches and balances to Ethereum 3. The homepage calls this the "EDGE chain" 1.
- Prices for risk. Liquidations use an oracle price from independent providers rather than the last traded price. This is meant to stop a thin order book or a single large trade from triggering liquidations 211.
Markets. Besides crypto perpetuals, the docs cover stock and forex perpetual contracts, and the homepage advertises commodities and tokenized stocks 1. These are synthetic contracts settled in stablecoins. They do not give you ownership of the underlying shares.
Funding and liquidation. Funding payments are exchanged between longs and shorts every hour, with the interest-rate adjustment clamped at ±0.05% 10. In cross-margin mode, positions are liquidated when available balance falls to zero and margin reaches the maintenance level 11. Maximum leverage varies by market. edgeX lists it in the "Risk Limit" tab of the trading screen rather than in its docs.
Accounts, deposits and withdrawals
Two ways to sign in. You can connect an EVM wallet such as MetaMask and sign a message, or log in with an email address and a six-digit code. The email option ("MPC login") creates a blockchain address for you automatically 5. edgeX's docs do not say who holds the key shares for email accounts. For full self-custody, the wallet login is the clearer choice. The docs do not mention KYC.
Deposits are in USDT, with a 10 USDT minimum. edgeX charges no deposit fee; you pay the network's gas. Ethereum deposits need about 15 confirmations, roughly five minutes. Deposits from other chains go through edgeX-run asset pools. One-off deposits over $300,000 can take up to two hours while pools rebalance. Email-account users deposit through Arbitrum 6.
Withdrawals go to Ethereum, BNB Chain or Arbitrum; email accounts can use Arbitrum only. Ethereum withdrawals are batched and can take up to 14 hours, and you pay only gas. Withdrawals to other chains cost 0.1% (minimum $1). They are also limited by how much liquidity sits in the destination chain's pool 7.
Fees
edgeX charges maker and taker fees that fall as your trading volume rises. As of October 23, 2026, its VIP page lists these perpetuals rates 8:
| Tier | 14-day volume | Perps maker / taker | Spot maker / taker |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular | under $10M | 0.040% / 0.045% | 0.040% / 0.070% |
| VIP 1 | $10M+ | 0.038% / 0.043% | 0.035% / 0.060% |
| VIP 3 | $100M+ | 0.030% / 0.035% | 0.025% / 0.040% |
| VIP 6 | $7B+ | 0.015% / 0.020% | 0.000% / 0.025% |
Selected tiers; VIP 2, 4 and 5 sit in between. The VIP page measures volume over 14 days, while edgeX's fee documentation describes a rolling 30-day window 89.
For a sense of scale: a $10,000 perpetual position opened and closed with market orders at the Regular rate costs $4.50 in taker fees each way, about $9 in total. Funding payments, any spread and price impact come on top. Withdrawals to non-Ethereum chains add 0.1% 7.
The EDGE token
EDGE is edgeX's governance and staking token, with a fixed supply of 1 billion 12. edgeX says holders can vote on improvement proposals covering fees, listings and upgrades, and can delegate EDGE to validators that maintain the order book in return for a share of protocol rewards 12.
The docs allocate 30% to early users (fully unlocked at genesis), 25% to core contributors, 30% to a future reserve and 5% each to liquidity, ecosystem and the foundation. The contributor and reserve allocations unlock gradually after cliffs of 24 and 18 months 12. The token launched on March 31, 2026, after an airdrop claim and pre-market trading period 15. Trading on edgeX does not require holding EDGE.
Access restrictions and risks
Who cannot use it. edgeX's terms bar anyone who lives in, is located in or is incorporated in the United States or Canada from the interface. They also bar Iran, Cuba, North Korea, Syria, Myanmar, and the Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions, plus other comprehensively sanctioned territories 14. Using a VPN to get around these terms breaches them.
Risks to understand:
- Leverage. Perpetuals can lose more than a spot position. Liquidation can close your position and wipe out the margin behind it 11.
- Operator dependence. Matching, the asset pools and the V2 sequencer are run by edgeX. V1 documented a forced-withdrawal route that lets users go straight to the contract if the operator stalls 4. edgeX's docs do not describe an equivalent escape hatch for V2.
- Smart contracts and bridges. edgeX lists audits by Rigsec and SlowMist, plus PeckShield's audit of StarkEx v4.5. None of them is dated on its audit page 13. Cross-chain deposits and withdrawals rely on edgeX's pools on each chain 67.
- Synthetic stock and forex markets depend on oracle prices that may behave differently outside regular market hours.
- Phishing. Searches for the "official website" are common. Use edgex.exchange and the app links published there, and never enter a seed phrase on a website.
Incident record
No exploit or loss of user funds found. A search on October 23, 2026 found no reported hack, exploit or loss of user funds at the edgeX exchange; results for "edgeX" incidents referred to the unrelated EdgeX Foundry IoT software project 17. edgeX does not publish a public status page that we could locate. Verdict: No known security incident.
No security incident found in the sources checked as of October 23, 2026. That is a dated observation, not a promise that none has happened.
Hacks in DefiLlama’s public database are also scored as the security record on the edgeX rating page.
