Chainlink
Chainlink is a decentralized oracle network: infrastructure that securely delivers off-chain data — most famously asset prices — to smart contracts that cannot fetch it themselves. A decentralized set of independent node operators fetches and aggregates data so no single source can be trusted or corrupted alone, and the results power much of DeFi. It was co-founded in 2017 by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis, went live on Ethereum mainnet in May 2019, and is developed by Chainlink Labs; LINK is the network's token. One disambiguation: a "chain-link fence" is an unrelated hardware-store product — this profile is the crypto oracle network.

What is Chainlink?
Smart contracts can only see data that lives on their own blockchain, yet most useful applications need outside information — an asset's price, an interest rate, the result of an event. Chainlink solves this "oracle problem": it is a decentralized oracle network that fetches off-chain data, has independent node operators agree on it, and delivers it on-chain. Its price feeds are the best-known product and underpin a large share of DeFi lending and trading. It launched on Ethereum mainnet in May 2019.
The network has grown well beyond price data. CCIP (Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol), live on mainnet since July 2023, lets applications send messages and value between blockchains. LINK is the network's token, used to pay node operators and, since staking v0.1 in December 2022, to be staked as an economic security backstop. Note the homonym: a "chain-link fence" is an unrelated fencing product sold at hardware stores; this page covers only the crypto oracle network built by Chainlink Labs.
Is Chainlink safe?
Chainlink's security rests on decentralization: each price feed is served by many independent, vetted node operators whose answers are aggregated, so a single bad or offline source cannot move the reported value on its own. The core oracle network has not been hacked to steal user funds — an important record given how much DeFi depends on it. LINK staking adds an economic layer, letting stakers back the network's performance and be penalized for faults.
The honest caveats are about how oracles are used, not a flaw in the network itself. An application that relies on a poorly configured feed, a thin market, or a single unusual data source can still be manipulated — several DeFi exploits elsewhere have come from bad oracle setups rather than a break in Chainlink. As always, the token and its integrations are also targets for phishing and fake-airdrop scams, so verify official domains and never share a seed phrase.

Frequently asked
Is Chainlink safe?+
Chainlink's core oracle network has not been hacked to steal user funds, and its security comes from decentralization: many independent node operators serve and aggregate each price feed, so no single source can move the result. LINK staking adds an economic backstop. The real risks are downstream — apps that use a badly configured feed — plus ordinary phishing and fake-airdrop scams.
What is Chainlink?+
Chainlink is a decentralized oracle network that delivers off-chain data, especially asset prices, to smart contracts that cannot fetch it themselves. Independent node operators fetch and aggregate the data on-chain. It went live on Ethereum in May 2019, is built by Chainlink Labs, and uses the LINK token; CCIP extends it to cross-chain messaging.
Is Chainlink the same as a chain-link fence?+
No. Chainlink (the crypto) is a decentralized oracle network and its LINK token. A "chain-link fence" is an unrelated woven-wire fencing product sold at hardware stores. This profile covers only the crypto oracle network.
What is CCIP?+
CCIP is Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol, live on mainnet since July 2023. It lets applications send messages and move value securely between different blockchains, using Chainlink's oracle and node infrastructure.
