What Is Renzo Protocol? ezETH, Restaking, Fees and Withdrawals

Renzo Protocol is a liquid restaking platform. Its main product is ezETH. You deposit ETH or stETH, Renzo restakes it through EigenLayer, and you receive a token that grows in value as rewards come in and stays usable in DeFi 2. Renzo has added versions for other ecosystems: pzETH on Symbiotic, ezSOL on Solana's Jito Restaking and ezBTC for wrapped bitcoin 8910. It also runs managed yield vaults 1. Two points matter before you deposit. First, its Terms of Service bar US persons 14. Second, getting ETH back directly from the protocol can take up to about two weeks 4.

Who is behind Renzo

The Terms of Service say the renzoprotocol.com website is run by RestakeX Ventures Ltd. The protocol itself is described as maintained by ecosystem participants, including the RestakeX Foundation. The Terms are governed by British Virgin Islands law, and disputes go to arbitration 14. The REZ tokenomics page calls the development team Renzo Labs 12.

Renzo has not published a leadership page. In 2024 coverage, Lucas Kozinski is described as a "founding contributor." The same reporting says Renzo raised a $3.2 million seed round in January 2024, at a $25 million valuation. Binance Labs made an undisclosed investment the following month. Other backers named were Maven11, Figment Capital, SevenX, IOSG and OKX Ventures 15. In June 2024, a company press release announced a further $17 million across two rounds, led by Galaxy Ventures and Nova Fund – BH Digital 16.

How ezETH works

Restaking means reusing staked ETH to secure other services built on EigenLayer. Those services pay extra rewards, and in return the staked ETH can be slashed. Renzo handles the setup for you:

  1. Deposit. Connect an EVM wallet in the Renzo app and deposit ETH or stETH. You receive ezETH 2.
  2. Delegation. Renzo delegates the collateral to node operators it works with. They run Ethereum validators and opt into EigenLayer services. An older FAQ names Figment as an operator and says Renzo started with five institutional operators 13.
  3. Rewards. ezETH is reward-bearing. Your token count stays the same, while the amount of ETH each ezETH can be redeemed for goes up as staking and restaking rewards are added back in 2.
  4. Use or exit. You can hold ezETH, use it in DeFi, sell it on a DEX or withdraw through Renzo (see below) 4.

You don't need 32 ETH; any amount can be deposited. Renzo can cap LST deposits from time to time 13.

Native restaking on layer 2s. You can also deposit ETH, WETH or wstETH on Arbitrum and Base and get ezETH there. Renzo moves the funds to Ethereum through the canonical bridge, which takes seven days. It prices deposits with Chainlink and batches transfers every 12 hours, or sooner once a chain reaches 32 ETH 6. ezETH can be moved between networks with the in-app bridge, which runs on Hyperlane 7.

Other products

  • pzETH works like ezETH but restakes through Symbiotic. It accepts stETH, wstETH, WETH or ETH and can be redeemed for its underlying collateral 8.
  • ezSOL is a vault token on Jito Restaking. You deposit SOL or JitoSOL. Rewards include staking, restaking and MEV tips, all compounded into the token's value 9.
  • ezBTC restakes wBTC on EigenLayer 10.
  • ezREZ, ezEIGEN, ezJTO and other ez-tokens are restaked versions of those tokens. They are listed in the Staking Suite docs.
  • Reserve Vaults are actively managed vaults. They spread deposits across lending markets and liquidity pools, and each vault has its own risk disclosure 1.
  • Enterprise Suite is a gated product for institutions 1.

Fees and costs

Cost Amount Applies to
Protocol fee 10% of rewards generated via restaking, split 50/50 between Renzo's treasury and node operators 3 ezETH
Standard withdrawal No fee published; Ethereum gas only 4 ezETH
Instant withdrawal Variable fee between a minimum and maximum in basis points; higher when the buffer is low 5 ezETH
L2 deposit Bridge fee up to 5 bps (capped at the 32 ETH level) plus a time-discount fee, currently 9 bps for ETH/WETH and 4 bps for wstETH 6 ezETH minted on L2s
ezSOL withdrawal 0.2% (0.1% Renzo + 0.1% Jito program fee) 9 ezSOL

The APY shown in the app comes from ezETH's price change over the last 30 days, annualized 11. It looks backward, so it doesn't predict future returns.

Withdrawals and exit options

ezETH can only be withdrawn on Ethereum mainnet. If you hold ezETH on a layer 2, you first bridge it to mainnet or swap it on a DEX 4.

Withdrawals go through a contract called WithdrawQueue, which keeps a buffer of ETH ready to pay out. Each request has a three-day cooldown. If the buffer has funds, Renzo expects about seven days in total. If the buffer is empty, it has to pull ETH out through EigenLayer and the beacon chain, which takes 10–15 days. Your ezETH stops earning rewards as soon as you request the withdrawal, and you claim the ETH yourself once it's ready 4.

Instant withdrawals skip the wait for a variable fee. They fail if the buffer is too low, and they are switched off while the protocol is paused 5. ezBTC has a 14-day cooldown 10. ezSOL becomes claimable after two Solana epochs, up to about four days 9.

Selling on a DEX is the other way out. You get the market price, which can be well below the token's ETH value when markets are stressed, as the incident record below shows.

Security and risks

  • Audits and bounty. Renzo lists Halborn reports from November 2023 to September 2024, Sigma Prime and Code4rena reviews from June 2024, and Nethermind audits from 2025, including the bridge. A bug bounty runs on Immunefi 13. Audits reduce risk but do not guarantee safety.
  • Slashing. Restaked ETH can be slashed if operators misbehave or a service they secure enforces penalties. Renzo's FAQ says deposits carry both smart-contract and slashing risk 13.
  • Layered dependencies. ezETH depends on Renzo's contracts, EigenLayer, its node operators, Chainlink pricing and, across chains, bridges 67.
  • Market liquidity. ezETH's DEX price can drift away from its redemption value. That matters most if you've borrowed against ezETH in lending markets 17.
  • Access restrictions. The Terms prohibit use by US persons and people in restricted territories, and allow IP blocking 14.
  • Phishing. Use renzoprotocol.com and the contract addresses on the docs site. Never enter a seed phrase anywhere.

Incident record

2 outcome unclear

ezETH fell as low as ~$700 on some DEX markets

Apr 23–24, 2024outcome unclear
This happened after users criticized the REZ airdrop terms, at a time when Renzo had not yet enabled withdrawals. The price drop triggered leveraged liquidations
Outcome
Market depeg, not a hack. Protocol recovered; losses were borne by leveraged users
Loss
~$56M liquidated across Gearbox (~$33M) and Morpho (~$23M) users. No contract exploit; Renzo's own reserves were not drained
Recovered or reimbursed
Price returned close to ETH within the day. Renzo later raised the airdrop allocation slightly. Liquidated positions were not reimbursed in the reporting found

Questions about Renzo

Is Renzo available in the United States?
No. The Terms of Service bar US persons and residents of restricted territories, with no exceptions 14.
What is the difference between ezETH and pzETH?
Both are liquid restaking tokens for ETH. ezETH restakes through EigenLayer. pzETH restakes through Symbiotic and accepts a wider range of ETH-type deposits 28.
How long does it take to withdraw ezETH?
About 7 days when the withdrawal buffer has ETH, and 10–15 days when it doesn't. An instant withdrawal is faster but costs a fee 45.
What is the REZ token used for?
REZ is Renzo's governance token. Holders vote on risk frameworks, accepted collateral, operator and service whitelisting, and treasury grants. Max supply is 10 billion 12.
Where can I check Renzo's TVL?
Renzo doesn't publish an official TVL figure in its docs. DefiLlama's Renzo page is the usual public tracker. TVL moves with ETH prices and deposits.
